Modelonia - New bank and some FRs

I've just completed my first small bank of 24 presets - all pretty much based on acoustic instruments but exploring hybridisations of them so bagpipes crossed with violas sort of sounds :) Nothing out of this world but maybe useful.

Having spent a while with this now I also have a few suggestions to consider that would, at least to me, improve useability.

1) Numerical parameters when turning knobs and sliders (maybe in the form of a tooltip) - this I feel is essential as so many subtle changes are interdependent in how the sound is expressed - even a very subtle change can have dramatic effects and I find it's hard to precisely tune or recapture elements of a sound when I don't have an exact number to go with it.

2) For some instrumental sounds - especially woodwinds and brass, I really feel the need for mono and legato modes so I can play in a more realistic manner.

3) I find the tunings display really fiddly to work with. Firstly I'd like to be able to draw a whole bunch of settings at once by sweeping across with the mouse instead of one at a time, secondly I need to be able to reset it all at once instead of laboriously one by one trying to get back to zero, thirdly using the mousewheel might be of help here too and fourthly why not have the ability to save and import tunings?

4) Full morphing between presets (like sculpture) would be wonderful - the model slider is a start but I get unpredictable results from it at the moment.

Here are the presets:

Hi,

first of all big thanks and happy new year!

and I agree with most of your requests,
good news: right now I'm working on mono legato

Post

Cool - can't wait :)

hey, your presets are good!
nice playable instruments,

may I add them to the default bank?

Post

Thanks very much - yeah that would be great :)

So anyone else tried this yet?

just downloaded now, thanks for these, I will post when I get the time to sit with them.

Hi aMUSEd,

thanks for the presets, very nice indeed!
Have played around with them a little, my favourite one is the "BLW Pushed flute" that sounds really good in the high registers.

Also second your suggestions 1-4 :) (have experimented with some "pseudo legato" by applying an expression pedal to the attack phase and the amount of noise but nontheless nice to hear that a proper legato mode is on the way 8) )

Some additional things:

* Some patches start to sound really "detuned" if one leaves a certain pitch range (e.g. tried to play some fugues with the "pushed flute" and the lower voices didn't match to the upper ones at all) - that's probably an effect of the synthesis approach (limited range for instruments with certain "physical" properties, Tassman has also the same problem) but perhaps one could nontheless find some clever retuning tricks to somewhat extend the possible fields of usage... whoknows... ;)

* am using quite demanding settings regarding latency and audio rate (for immediate response) in combination with a far from top notch notebook so it's no wonder that cpu resources go low with certain patches and high polyphony. But it's a little bit strange that Modelonia sometimes needs a relatively long "recovery phase" after heavy cpu spikes (everything sounds a little bit distorted and detuned for some time. Have to play e.g. a couple of separated staccato notes for some seconds in order to get it back to normal, just waiting doesn't help in some cases)

Greetings,
NothanUmber

Hey, that is exactly why Liqih implemented the tuning adjustment interface on the 'extended' skins  .

thanks, will have a look at that
(would be cool if that correction would also work for notes whose absolute pitch is not solekly based on the note pitch but that is additionally influenced by the position of the pitch bend wheel (or a ribbon...) :hihi:) (or is that already working willhavetotry...))

willhavetotry
no, atm. it doesn't :) (is there a way to show the correction factors for notes below A3 ?)

Nice to know there's more people experimenting with Modelonia. Since I already have a VL70, Nord G2, Reaktor and Tassman I was reluctant to buy another PM synth at first (thinking I was pretty much covered) but after seeing what I could get from the demo in such a short space of time its really an inspiring instrument to play with :)

Hey aMUSEd, I really love the presets. My favourite is 'Drifting tones 2', but there are many quaity ones here.

I personally find your presets to be of a better standard than most of the default presets (mine included of course). In fact it really makes me wonder what someone with alot of experience in PM could do for Modelonia in producing a strong and focussed default bank, to really bring out all the beauty (and terror, IMO) that this unique synth is capable of.

Thanks for the presets, I look forward to more :)

that's flattering, <grin>

we could say that Modelonia is a compact sized PM synth, like in digital cameras world : sometimes
a point-and-shot get you the right result faster
