Will a drum tool be a valuable addition to T2?

didnt claim it was ... but since you raise the point (although starting this debate may - or may not - derail your original stated intention for the thread) ...Slacknote wrote:Well "something about the diamonds I don't like the look of ..." is hardly a useful contribution to a discussion about GUI is it?pHz wrote:commandline tools are where its at ...
... although i understand the arguments behind the request i personally dont find the diamond on the line approach as intuitive as a normal piano roll grid (but then ive never really used cubase) ... although visually you DO have the spike of the diamond on the line the shape itself begins BEFORE the time of the note trigger which to me is as counter-intuitive as the piano roll approach obviously is to you ... with the piano roll the note 'block' starts where the note-on message is actually sent and you can just as easily see multiple hits (admittedly as long as your zoom level is high enough) ...
... IMHO you COULD add a 'drum' tool to T2s piano roll but i would have it (off the top of my head) do only the following ...
> automatically set default note length to 1/32 while drum mode is active (although still allowing note length to be dragged out for partcular events)
> allow the 'click-hold-drag' painting of note events as you describe (locking to current global snap value)
> offer a 'fold' option like live5s where only 'active' notes are shown on the grid
... this seems the best way to me to keep the GUI consistent while offering features that make drum programming a little easier ...

I would rather have some tools that will help me with drum editing, than another tool or mode.
Taking pHz suggestion, you can see it's not that far away.
Add support for drum maps to that feature and you have working drum editor, without any modes.
Tracktion already supports getting drum names from certain filters (like its own sampler), as well as displaying GM drum names when MIDI clip is set to channel 10 - so that shouldn't be hard to implement.

You can just set the note length to this length, when working on a drum part. Maybe a per-clip note length will be useful?pHz wrote: > automatically set default note length to 1/32 while drum mode is active (although still allowing note length to be dragged out for partcular events)
IIRC, you can already do that with the line tool.> allow the 'click-hold-drag' painting of note events as you describe (locking to current global snap value)
Fold in Live is a great feature and will suit T just nicely. Seconded.> offer a 'fold' option like live5s where only 'active' notes are shown on the grid

... i was looking at it a little from the psychological aspect of using a GUI ... if you have a little 'drum mode' button that automatically throws all these toggle switches for you youre already in a drum programming headspace (which i think is the REAL impact of the little diamonds actually) ...

Yes, yes, yes.
I thought I was the only one who wanted this. I'll add my 2 (euro!) cents and support for a drum grid please, pretty please Jules. Currently it's too frustrating and very slow to program drums in the midi editor and I've been a drummer for 20 years.
Also full screen midi editing please while they're at it.

It starts with considering the psychological elements of the drum programmer, and ends with a brushed-metal full-screen mixer with 3d faders and LEDs.... i was looking at it a little from the psychological aspect of using a GUI ... if you have a little 'drum mode' button that automatically throws all these toggle switches for you youre already in a drum programming headspace (which i think is the REAL impact of the little diamonds actually) ...

What rocks about T's interface is that there are no modes - it's all there. This is why the current approach to mixing beats traditional mixer. This is why I rather maximize a track (vert. zoom should be improved though), then have a dedicated editor page. The less swiches/ buttons/ modes the better.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for improvement in drum editing, and MIDI editing in general. I am a MIDI guy, and always resort to other tools (eXT, ERA, GURU) to bypass T's MIDI editor.
But as with all features, this should be implemented in a way that will not mess Tracktion's one and only great asset: its user interface.

I like this, +1 for this feature.
Yes, the diamonds are necessary for overlapping notes, no dount about it. Note length is necessary, cymbals shouldn't always ring out to their maximum length.

True that's why I wrote "drum tool" and not "drum editor". Maybe I shouldn't even call it "drum tool" but "a stick that drops diamonds".

When you fold a track midi track in live it resizes the piano roll so that only those notes which are being used are visible - makes it a little easier to work with drum samplers etc.Slacknote wrote:Please explain what Fold is.spacefox wrote:Fold in Live is a great feature and will suit T just nicely.
Just a little workflow thing.

I have it already, its just as you've described it but better on all accounts.
