Newbie question: How do I split up my drum track?

OK Now how do I do this with BFD all where each out is sent to one instance of a compressor such that I can vary (and automate hopefully) the level of each send?

the tutorial on the first page should get you there gordon if you just swap BFD in for DK+ ... if i read you right you want all outs sent to just one compressor though ???
... in that case stop at step 3 and then do the following ...
> INSIDE the rack add a normal tracktion vol / pan filter between each BFD out and the corresponding rack output (dont have BFD here so ive used RMIV this time and showed the outputs as stereo pairs for clarity but you can adapt this to suit the configuration of BFD) ...

> then just add you compressor on the same track as your rack-wrapped BFD ...

> then you can use the vol/pan filters inside the rack to control the level of each BFD out sent to your compressor ...
... should do the trick gordon ...

Great stuff Rob. This is exactly what I wanted to do. I will need 16 volume and pan intances, right for BFD all's 16 outs, right. It's that it is not clear to me whether or not each line routing is mono or stereo.

that i dont know since i dont have BFD and have no idea how its outputs are set up ... in RMIV for example i can define how many mono and how many stereo outs the plugin has ... presumably BFD allows similar ???

BFD All has 17 outs.. some are stereo but most are mono.Beardedone wrote:Great stuff Rob. This is exactly what I wanted to do. I will need 16 volume and pan intances, right for BFD all's 16 outs, right.
The top 6 outputs are Overheads, Room and PZM mics, all grouped into stereo pairs. You will need one Volume filter for each pair.
The rest are all mono outputs for the close mics.. you should use 1 volume filter for each mono output, and wire it to both the left and right pins of the Volume filter.
If you wire all the volume filters to the same pair of rack outputs you can treat the rack as a single stereo VSTi.. heres the one I use:

It looks daunting at first, but it makes perfect sense when you know whats what: The top row of three GAC-1 + Volume filters are wired to the overheads, room and pzm outs respectively, and then all pass through the global "room" volume in the top right before reaching the rack outputs. The next row down gives me the hi hats close mic off on its own and the three cymbal mics over to the right. The 3 volume filters at the bottom left control Kick In, Kick Out or a mix of both with the GAC-1 below running in dual mono mode to provide seperate compression & EQ for each mic. Likewise, the 3 volume filters + GAC-1 to the right control the top and bottom snare mics, or both together. Further over to the right, each tom mic gets its own GAC-1 + volume control. It makes total sense to me, but I really wish you could label filters in racks so I didn't have to explain that picture in so much detail!
Alternatively you could set up BFD feeding multiple tracks as described in Robs loverly tutorial, then route all those tracks to another to create a sub-group. Your global drum compressor can then go on the group.

Gordon, you can download IIRs archive link and try it in your instance of T; not sure that was made clear.

Yes, assuming you have GAC1. Otherwise they will show up as missing plugs and you will need to re-cable.. GAC1 has a trial period if you don't have it alreadyrockstar_not wrote: Gordon, you can download IIRs archive link and try it in your instance of T; not sure that was made clear.

Thanks IIRs. I do not have GAC-1. What is it? I don't see it in the db.

Hey IIRs! That is one great sounding setup! Hell if I cannot replicate this with Neodynium or TRacks, I may just have to hold off upgrading to Kontakt2 in order to buy GAC-1. I have not bought any of the the Golden series.

Here's an alternative version using just the Mackie plugs:

Archive
This one uses a bit more cpu, but I think that mostly because I added a reverb send.. its very simple: the snare and tom close mics are routed to an extra pair of rack outs, which can then be sent to a reverb on another track. This version loses the seperate controls for kick in / out and snare top / bottom and instead mixes both outs together before the compressor.. you can still adjust the balance on the BFD GUI of course.
You need to be careful when using any plugs that have latency (like the Mackie ones) but if you do it right the latency of the whole rack will be compensated automatically
