I understand the need completely.
It does what you think, but I've heard that the sounds of Bandstand are still a little cheesy
I'm thinking of using my old Roland MT-32 just for this purpose.

Can't be any cheesier than i currently use, either the audigy -synth, or the sounds from my clavinova.
I also can get ( supposedly) garritan general midu thru finale. Although i haven't even seen that advertised for sale.

There's always Colossus, though I haven't yet really gone through their GM bank.

Colossus has a GM "bank" but there's no way to get it to respond multi-timbrally (is that a word?) to GM program change msgs, and one instance can only load 8 sounds/channels. So, making it operate like a "GM Module" is not gonna happen (and I believe that is what Bandstand excels at). Granted the Colossus sounds are top-notch.

I spent a long time with Bandstand at my local dealer as I really wanted it to be the solution I was after. Alas, I was forced to conclude that my Korg NX5R is not going to retire from GM/XG duties any time soon.
Bandstand just doesn't give the same results. Even though it has Gb worth of data, the little Korg sounds MUCH better when you listen to a GM file. Secondly, Bandstand trips itself when you have program change messages in the files (other than at the beginning of each track).
As much as I like other NI Products (I have Komplete 3 and Kore), Bandstand was very disappointing and a waste of money in my opinion.

Kermit: well, that's a bummer. What makes the korg sound better?
faster access to the sounds?
better sounds?
I pretty much never have any program changes in these songs.
Have you heard of this garritan product?
The only place i have seen it mentioned so far is on the finale 2007 update page.

So far gary has not made any formal announcements of a stand-alone GM app, although he has hinted at it often enough. Bandstand suffers from the same problem that plagues ALL Kontakt-Kompakt-Intakt products - it takes far, far too long (anything over half a second is useless professionally when changing patches during a song, and the process must NOT stop whatever else is playing, these plugs do neother.)

I think what made the Korg stand out is the sounds working well with one another as opposed to each individual preset sounding good.

It would work OK, but for the price, I'd still consider a used Sound Canvas, Yamaha MU...

bahhh.
I have plenty of modules.A ultra proteus, the sounds in my clavinova 307, a karma. I wonder if the karma has the same sounds as your korg box?
Perhaps i'll wait if/when the garritan gm library for finale comes out.
