BWAAAAAAAAAAHAa! Haven't seen one of those since that guy from the Georgia Satellites. I remember Geezer Butler playing a bass version a little back in the early 70's. Still a cool looking guitar.

The only thing I really ever worry about in a guitar is if it FEELS comfortable. When I go into a pawn shop or guitar center or whatever, I refuse to be one of those butt-greasing geeks that turns it on and is like "look at me". I just go down the line and put my hand around each neck until I find what I like. THEN - I check to see if it's not about to fold or has a neck that is shaped like a football. I'm not too worried about the sound - with the right amp or AMP SIM (!!!!!:D), that's easy!

Hey y'all - we can praise and dis everybody, but I still think that almost every guitarist in the world can do one little tiny thing better than the other (except Peter Buck of REM). Just gotta listen out for it. Most music sucks, but there's still SOMETHING in each artist that can help you......

Okay - back to sounds - early sounds - I'm from Macon, GA, so it would only be normal for me to be an Allman Brother freak. I started listening to them about the time they started (I was listening to my dad's demos he'd gotten from Phil Walden at age 6), and Duane Allman's lead sound on Fillmore East was just out of control. I'm not sure if i've ever heard a better natural distortion sound than that. 50 watt Marshalls, and (of all things) JBL's in his cabs. Wide Open. Saweeeeeeeeeet sound. You could hear the wood of those guitars for DAYS!!!

we're a lot alike, but I say I don't pick guitars that I like, I pick guitars that like me...;)

I never knew people looked at us guitarists like this.

Well - at least we aren't keyboardists. :D

Most musicians are pricks. I'd still rather fish.

you from building your dream sim in something like Chainer.
I do it all the time..separate effects, preamps, amps and such
follwed by a convolution plugin,(SIR, Revolverb, Boogex) and one of the many great cabinet impulses out there....or if you've got your own favorite cabs you can just roll your own impulses.

I've been able to get tones this way that blow the doors
off any single ampsim. Granted it won't give you stiffy
like a roaring full stack......I'm not ready to gig with
a laptop yet, but I've been doing a lot of tracking with sims lately and I defy any purist to pick the Coke from the Pepsi.

Cheers......CL
Oh, yeah....with ya there Cap'n. My eXT guitar rigs are getting more involved every day and it's a blast!! I've just started experimenting with the FreeAmp guitar synth - things will NEVER be the same!:hihi:

The reason I was saying there was a need for dynamic speaker/cab emulation is that I beleive that software amp sims do fine at distortion for the most part, despite the title of this thread. Where they are lacking the most, IMO, is in dynamic speaker emulation. Boogex does a great job tone-wise with convolution, but it's static, no cabinet sag/bloom, no low end thunk. I can get some of that using multiple compressors to push/pull the signal but I have no idea how to do the missing ....mmm, speaker distortion?

Basically, I'd like to make static speaker emulation more dynamic - any ideas?

You don't know that for sure. There are so many music productions today that just line the guitar, and do the ampworks processing later. How much of this broadcasted, that you liked, you have no idea.

There have been blind tests on this, and you simply cannot here the difference in a mix.

It's really a lot of work getting to know a tube amp and what it can do for you for every job. You need the freedom to set any volume to get it just right.

So most guitarplayers skip that, and use tube amp but extended with stompboxes of different sorts. Many of these boxes sound just awful when recorded from directly, because it's often diode clipping and stuff, which produces non harmonic content. But together with the filtering in a good tube amp, you get by with this set.

This kind of response when playing is difficult to get with a simulated digital plugin, but it's getting there. And I mean the actuall feel for the guitarplayer, how it is responding.

In a mix you cannot tell the difference. 8)

Sorry, but what I heard from you in my book is less than average. I know, you may slowly start to hate me, but I prefer being honest and I'm really getting sick of this permanent "oh, I owned all sorts of amps and sims, all sorts of guitars and PUs, and what I'm getting now is like the most praised tone I ever got". Might be like that - but I don't even want to know your previous tone then.

Sure, I've got no idea. But have you? And have you gotten any links?

Again: Any links?

As far as the emotions of it all, you're going to get more out of somebody that has actual volume kicking him/her in the ass. I'm recording (again) with the Tube Baby right now, but I've got to admit - playing with a ball-free sound at first is kind of a drag. I like to FEEL the noise a little bit (note I didn't say "NOIZE").

I think everything in music is cool in moderation. I'm sure I'll be using some sims for future recordings, but music as a whole is becoming so pathetic as is - due to more and more gimmicks and whatnot, that I still like to try to get a FEW real things in there...

Am I making any sense, or am I just being an old, fart-sniffing snob? :(

Then mute me and don't listen to my music, problem solved. If I am happy and it brings me pleasure, why does that bother you so much? The fact you keep telling me how bad I am tells me that the above is a mask. I have every right to post my thoughts and my music, if you don't like it get Ben to ban me. No one is making you listen to my music or read my posts. But the way I see it, the constant putdowns suggest the problem isn't with my playing or what I say...the problem is yours and all yours, and I have absolutely nothing to prove to you.

When you were in school studying music I was in school studying people, one proven theory is that when we strongly dislike something about someone, it's usually because in that person we see something we do not like about ourselves. If I were you I would worry more about that, than trying do to do whatever it is you're trying to do by following me around all the time and telling me how bad I am.

No, I'd never do any such a thing.
If I am happy and it brings me pleasure, why does that bother you so much?
It doesn't bother me at all.
What DOES bother me though is you spreading your all so shiny wisdom in EACH AND EVERY guitar tone related thread, be it about pickups, picks, wood, playing, amps and what not, whereas I don't know of any guitar (or guitar tone) afficionado who would even remotely praise your tone. That's why I asked where and when.
The fact you keep telling me how bad I am tells me that the above is a mask. I have every right to post my thoughts and my music, if you don't like it get Ben to ban me.
What a nonsense.

You don't have anything to prove to me, that's right.
But you're not open to ANY criticism when it comes to ANYTHING guitar related, because you've got all the wisdom there is. Heck, when I told you your phrasing was freaking boring, you said "I'm happy with it, so there" instead of even remotely thinking about asking WHY I would said so and what I might suggest to improve things. This to me looks like you being just absolutely ignorant.
When you were in school studying music I was in school studying people, one proven theory is that when we strongly dislike something about someone, it's usually because in that person we see something we do not like about ourselves.
Aha. Interesting. So, as a professional teacher, I am supposed to NOT say what I don't like, eh?
If I were you I would worry more about that, than trying do to do whatever it is you're trying to do by following me around all the time and telling me how bad I am.
I'm not following you at all. You just happen to post in each and every guitar oriented thread, selling your wisdom as some sort of absolute truth, whereas you (at least in my opinion, and I'm sure most guitar musicv afficionados would share that) can't even show the slightest soundfile earning your words any credibility. Ok, I know "lots" of people love your tone and playing. And of course, you do as well. So there's no room for improvements. Especially not in case such an asshole like me is even thinking about telling you how to improve. And especially as you already know how to improve anyways. Yeah, right. So, I'm done with that.
