Just to clarify, you do talk about two different things, don't you? Summing to mono is one thing. Historically, manufacturers just saved money for a second input & AD converter, but the algos knew about two channels. 'independant-stereo' seems to me a special FX configuration, such as I had on the DP/4 (4x mono), but that's another thing as the reverb output had to be summed to mono anyways.
But I still don't see why you can generalize the stereo-depth perception. Please explain.
