I agree some of it is boring but I totally disagree with some of what you said and in a general way, you've decided anyone using this gear is not writing their own music. Since that includes me, I'm going to arguefunkychickendance wrote:Le Whatever. Personally, I'd rather play an original song in a tone that I thought was appropriate to it, and forget 'whose' it was. This is part of a modern obsession with brand names and cachet. There was nothing particularly magic about all this old gear -- it was the best they could do at the time, that's all. And it wasn't the gear, it was the players.beergeek wrote:
I don't get how playing an original song using the tone that Jimi used on "The Wind Cries Mary" makes me an Elvis impersonator. By that logic, EVERYONE using a vintage Marshall stack or a Fuzz Face or a '68 Strat is unoriginal.
Jimi and Eric are my guitar heros. While they may not be yours, I think I have a lot of company in my camp. To each his own.

Boring argument, and I have nothing more to say. The old hippies have turned into their parents...it's not like it was in my day, why I remember when...'

A preset from this gear might very well be appropriate but you are dismissing it because you feel it's a modern obsession with brand names?
That sounds a lot like a statement from an old hippie.. "I'm not into material things man..."
To say there was nothing magic about the gear is dead on...depending on what gear you're talking about. Have you heard the difference between a Tube mic pre that uses an 12AX7 and one that doesn't?
There's a reason they are still making a Fuzz Face or a Crybaby that adheres to the orginal specs. There IS a tonal difference, the question is whether you like that tone or not. You don't think it's magic but I do.
What kind of gear you use? I would say it's pretty hard NOT to be using something that's been endorsed by someone these days
You are right about the the players being the real magic though. Again, I happen to think Eric and Jimi were magic and maybe you don't.
The bottom line dude...you're inferring that a lot of people have no talent and use this gear as a crutch even though it's worthless in your eyes. The worst part is that you imply that you are superior because you disdain anything so material. I'm just here to tell you it ain't true.
But as you say Le Whatever.
