Why do you keep quoting $70 when you've already been told that the upgrade price is not yet known?

What's the big deal? No one knows the price yet so specualtion is going to happen. Someone said 69$ so I repeated it. It's not a conspiracy.

Because you are saying it like you know it be true, which means that someone else may read your post and mistakenly assume you actually know what you are talking about.

That's what torrents are for.

Didn't you rush in on your white horse and clear that up? Good work Sir Valley! You are a wise and competent Knight.

you seem to be confused about the purpose of forum moderators.

I'm sure Mr. Beno will be grateful for the 50 questions he'll get about "the $69 upgrade". Why make things up when the real prices will be out shortly and there are plenty of other things to talk about?

Post

"($69 - I believe)" was my quote, and was what I had heard at the show along with the other package prices.
Beno has posted in another thread that the online upgrade price has not yet been established so what I had heard was either speculation, 'wrong', or changed - either way... MY BAD !

Ugh. Torrents as a theory are great. In practice, I've never found a torrent to be a fast download. I've been downloading various Linux distros and VMware appliances, and some of them are taking as much as 2 days to download. That's 700MB. Never mind the several Gigabytes of a bundle.

I think boxed-only for bundle is a very fair and reasonable thing to expect.

Torrents can be bleeding fast if there are good seeders. If a company decides to distribute something with a torrent, they can set up several mirror servers to help take the load. Also if the seeders can distribute to the leechers faster, the leechers will be able to seed better.
It sure beats having several http/ftp servers to choose from, most people choose the first one anyway.

That said. I think it's better to distribute it boxed. But it's not really a problem to distribute several gigs over the internet these days. The technology is there, it's just a matter of setting it up properly.

Post

I agree. But if Mackie can't sort out their own server to go more than 30kB/s, I have my doubts that they'll seed a multi-gig torrent effectively. If even Linux distro makers in their ultimate geekery and support of torrent technology can't get a torrent to arrive at lightning speed, that's saying somethin'.

I am with you, I just think it's a shame that nobody's using the available technology to its utmost.

Plus, torrents are much less secure then just having the files on disk or in your account. It would require setting up a whole new torrent tracker, and keeping the general public off of the tracker and it's torrents can be a pain. Trust me, I know!

Anyways, disks are probably the only option. I think the ideal situation would be to send the disks, but allow downloading of the core program through the servers. However, there is no way to register your boxed bundle without actually having it. Probably wouldn't work.
