How to make new copies of parts

How can I make new copies of parts that can be altered without changing the original part? I've tried ctrl dragging and alt dragging but it always changes the original.

I tried shift+ctrl+dragging and it won't even make a copy to drag. What am I missing here?
Mac Pro Quad 2.66 GHz. 9GB RAM

Start the drag with no keys held down, then add shift+ctrl before dropping. Hrmm, not intuitive...
