I have recently heard a trancey bassline masked by kikdrum without midi timing or sidechain compression.

Both channels went through a normal wideband limiter.

Without the kik the bassline was a full 16-note no-gap piece, without velocity alterations.

But when the 4x4 kik entered it totally masked the bass corresponding bass notes. The effect was that of swinging, very desirable.

Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to ask the author how he achieved that.

The most obvious thought is that the two instruments shared the same spectrum. But I have even tried using a spectrum copied-paster (eqium) to trim the spectrum of bass to match that of kik and regadless of the poor sounding of the bass, the whole effect was not achieved.

Any ideas how to do the trick?

Could be an amp envelope effect triggered in time with the kick, but I'd guess something was going on with overlapping frequencies. You already tried that though, and ruled out sidechaining, so I don't have a clue. I'm a load of help today.

Try HouseEffect for the amp env trick. De la mancha makes one also, but I haven't used it.

Or more than that... I suspect they share the same waveform (sine?), but well out of phase.

Another approach:

Depending on your host's capabilities, you may be able to use a recorded automation curve of the kick's level, and then use this curve in inverted form to automate the volume ducking on the bass level or to drive compression thresholds.

This free plugin from Blue Cat
enables recording of automation curves. The BC DigitalPeakMeter is setup as a track insert, and in armed mode, your DAWg should record three automation tracks, one corresponding to the level of the meter. I've only used it in Podium

Yo, I feel honoured to have that topic in my forum, but please don't advertise for stuff I don't even know... I'm working on kick ass compression and I'd love to have some serious discussion here when it's out, but that won't be until very much later this year. Earliest.

I'm strong advocate for Podium though 8-)

I would think that if you ran them both through the same limiter, and the kick drum was nice and LOUD, it would simply start chewing into the bassline's headroom, and depending on its decay, would create that "swinging" effect on the bassline.
