So? I know there's a stigma about "using presets" but I find that once you know a synth's "personality," finding which ones to mix and match in a mix is a fine way of making music. BTW, define "productive." Ending in a product? How many of us here have any sort of product that actually sells?

I get a lot done by doing a "random" selection of presets after I have an idea of what my "featured" sound will be. The trick is to make the music work with the instruments at hand. Sometimes a synth is replace with another, but more often than not it can all be made to work. This combo of instruments and guitar IS my "patch."

You can have too many though, and if a synth doesn't have a very distinct quality to it I delete it as quick as I can. My recommendation to the OP is keep what you have, they all have distinct sounds and personalities and add Zebra or that ever else you want, but don't just get it because you have some spending cash. Make sure you define a "hole" or "need" in your arsenal that the new instrument will fill.

Whatever you do, trimming down your selection of synths will make you more productive.
Truer words were never spoken. When you're screwing around with two dozen softsynths, you end up using them as a bunch of preset machines and never really seem to dig very deep into any of them.

I don't think its about using presets being bad, but about using a fraction of what you've paid for. To me it seems like a shame to have a whole bunch of interesting and powerful synths like zebra, and not actually use that power yourself. I use presets all the time, but I also like to use the synthesizer itself, too.

Finishing a song.

Cheers!
If the sax and trumpets achieve the same degree of realism  I prefer any low budget GM Pc soundcard imo Al Kamala is shooting himself in the foot ......

Zebra, fortunately, deserves some better zelators than this ....

Yeah. Forget using Zebra for realistic acoustic instruments. For any synth sound though, it can get close enough to any particular "personality" to make the differences musically moot.

(Except for sample-based sounds).

Except some percussion which Zebra can emulate as well as PM synths like Tassman...

Or maybe flutes:

(also has Z2 doing that DX7 cliché)

BTW: If Elhardt set his mind to creating a realistic piano using Zebra2, I'm pretty sure he'd end up with a much better emulation than the one he did on MMV (which was already pretty convincing!). But there's the question "what's the point?"...

I hadn't heard of the guy before, but did a search and found this. Astonishing stuff!

My favourite - the last mp3 MMV Creation. Quite Tomita-esque.

Whilst I'm thinking of it (maybe this should have gone in the requests bit) any chance of a Tomita switch in a future Zebra? Failing that can we have some more Tomita patches please Howard? 'Paraphonium' sounds very Tomita-ish to me; I presume that that was the intention? A patch that recreates that 'spaced-out' male choir 'ah' (melotron?) sound that he used a lot would be really nice (but then, did I read somewhere that Tomita 'cheated' and used a - heavily processed - real choir sometimes?).

Exactly. There's only so much time in which to actually make music...

Any synth sound I'd need in a tune (except granular) I can get from Zebra though.
