This could be anything. Step sequencers, step recording(I think Reaper has that already, no?), arpeggiators, plugins that play a chord based on intervals you define whenever you hit a single note. Stuff like that. Basically anything that would help create sequenced MIDI parts so you don't have to mouse in every note(or can't play that well)
Did you took a look at the JS Scripts? You can do a lot of this stuff with existing ones, and even better, can easily write own scripts ;-)

But i agree, that the conventional midi stuff isn't reapers strength.
I have, but I'm a script dummy. I'm assuming it is similar to the Kontakt Scripting? If so, that is very cool. But a lot of people would agree that a custom coded, integrated solution is better than a script. Too many scripts and it will start to seem "added on" instead of part of the program, when actually coding things in will help the workflow to stay or become tighter and also open you up to more integration.

I love Kontakt scripting personally. Best thing for samplers in a long time. But there's a reason why Garritan and East West have coded their own engines. There are surefire advantages.

But it's a good idea to use JS in the meantime.

Keep in mind that my replies above were just to clarify somebody else's post. I don't own Reaper at this time.

Although I'm not the ultimate midi fan when it comes to REAPER, it is easy to overlook some of its capabilities in that area.

Whether they are additional power provided by included JS scripts, simple interfaces hiding more complex functionality, the ability to roll your own macros with the given events, the ability to render a plug-in midi effect into a take, REAPER does have alot of power that is not really front-and-center.

Also - Justin has opened up REAPER to plug-in development so that functionality can be added seemingly to the application itself to some degree. This may well provide significant potential too. Some people are taking advantage of this already, but I don't know how far the accessibility extends into midi editing etc...

To be honest, some of the discomfort I have when composing midi in REAPER, I would probably feel to some degree in Cubase, Logic and Sonar. I guess I like the more "less-than-linear" approach of some other applications when I'm composing. I don't think REAPER is about that (and possibly shouldn't be about that).

Actually I was recently composing something in XT2 and tried for the first time to transfer the audio to REAPER via ReaRoute for mixing purposes. Worked pretty nicely actually.

The native extension development possibilities are not yet at a point where MIDI editing functions could be comfortably coded by 3rd parties, but I am sure that will happen at some point, too.

I've been requesting a number of midi improvements since I first bought Reaper such as spline automation envelopes and improvements to automation and they are beginning to get implemented so hang in there.
Maybe so, but I have yet to see any improvements to actual piano roll workflow. Additionally, as I said, no one on the REAPER forums even replies to the feature requests I've made on this subject.

Same here - midi requests for years and no action. I understand that reaper is young but so is Temper...Seems to be a definite difference in dev philosophy yet many Reaperites are quick to point out things like js and scripting but you "IMO" should not have to create basic midi functionality through script. Improve basic functionality - Yes - not create the functionality in the first place, thats the dev's job.

That's happened to everybody, there's so many FRs everyday that new ones quickly disappear of the radar. Happened to me too many times to mention.

You got a link to yours?

It appears that you have started 4 threads, of these, 2 are in Newbie-land and 2 are in the feature requests forum... So you are upset because you made 2 un-actioned feature requests? :
FR: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=20928 0 replies- probably because everything in this FR is already easily doable and implemented in a logical workable way.

FR: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=17792 4 replies - 3 ++1s even though, again, I am not sure what you are asking for that is not in reaper?

Newbie land: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=20411 0 replies - not an FR nor is there any replies. Perhaps folks were confused. What is a blank note?
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=17790 2 replies one is you bumping... all doable and well documented in the manual. Did you download the manual?

So perhaps Reaper's MO is not for you, and that is cool, but if you want to count un-actioned feature requests, then my friend I have you beat like a naughty stepchild.
:D

First FR is not easily doable. If it were, I would be doing it. I WANT to use Reaper as my main sequencer. You simply can't change the mouse assignments to match, for example, FLStudio's. It's not possible.

Second FR, you'll excuse me if I didn't continue to check the thread, but you must admit - several months without ++ is pretty bad, and a mere 2 votes for it is not significant compared to the dozens of votes for a multitude of other features.

If they simply made the piano roll mouse functionality customizable then I'm sure so many people would be pleased. Admittedly there are other features I'd like to see in Reaper that are currently in FL, but I can do without them - customizable piano roll, I can't.

As for question about quick-jogging, at the time I asked the feature did not even exist, AFAIK now, but it was implemented at some later point and works fine. The control suggested by the one person that responded, at the time, did not work.

Sonar7 implemented a feature like this, and I think it would help a lot of people who all have different ideas of what they want the Reaper piano roll/sequencer to do.

For example, I love FL's mapping. Here are some things that I'd love in REAPER: Left click once to drop a note. Hold right click to use an "erase" tool that allows you to quickly delete a bunch of notes. Left click and drag when placing a note to move it in ANY direction - left, right, up, or down. As the note is dragged to new pitches, it sounds off.

Allowing users to do that, assign tools to left, left+hold, right, right+hold, and define behavior would be really awesome.

I'm a big fan of right-click erase too, in the midi editor...possibly incompatible with Reaper's right click menu, but there's probably a solution for that somewhere.

The rest that you mentioned are already in there.

But as I said, FRs drop off the radar every day, happens to everyone. It doesn't mean no one is interested, probably most missed it. All the action is in the main page... :)

That's a ridiculous comparison - Temper started out from the get go primarily as a midi sequencer and that has been it's main focus throughout its development so of course it's far ahead of Reaper and probably always will be on the midi front. Reaper does need work on the midi side but I've been one of the most vocal in calling for this myself and there is movement - obviously slower than some would like but to say they are not responsive is unfair. Both apps seem to have a responsive and innovative team but with different priorities and that's why they are good complements.

alt+8 is the default, but I re-assigned it to BE = Toggle single click note entry.
MO = Left click draw, and as you draw feel free to move the mouse up and down, the note will be dropped when you release the mouse button. Click on a not and and release to erase. click on and drag to move it around. resize as normal.

alt+8 put you out of single click mode so you won't accidentally remove notes when trying to edit velocities and whatnot quickly.

but you are absolutely correct. Reaper is not, nor will it ever be FL. And thus it may not be the best fit for you.

good luck

They are not good compliments for Mac users cause Temper is PC only with no plan for a Mac version.

Hey Sascha Franck, did I get you right?
Sorry for the late reply (I'm on holidays), but yes, that's exactly how it works. As long as I have the velocity tool selected on my right mouse button, that is (or through CMD + left button, which is another key combination to assign a tool to). But I'm using it like that all the time.

Fwiw, there's quite some things coming to my mind when it comes to dealing with MIDI (and other parts as well, in the arrangement) that some host developers could "adopt" from Logic, probably too much to list them right now (I'm on my way to a morning swim in the cretan mediterranean sea...), but I'll probably do so in a few days or so.
