I would advise buying what you need today - not what ppl think you'll need tomorrow.

my 2c may happen to be unpopular, but I think you simply can't go wrong with today's computers.

I had an athlon2500+ and 512 ram for five years until its integrated video card got broken. about time to change the computer. for an equivalent of 250 euros last holiday I bought new components, i.e. mobo, intel q6600 and 2 gb ram plus a 500gb 7200 disk.

no big financial effort, but great improvement in performance.
I gladly accepted the need to upgrade, but had the card not got broken, I would have stayed with the old daw for another year or two.

as long as you don't mind the 3gb limit of xp 32bit, or want to keep some applications which are not vista or 64 compatible, xp 32 will serve you long enough. and you can ghost all the system onto the new computer.

Brands grossly don't seem to matter. services can stay. trust me I keep all original sevices in xp and internet is always on, and avast antivirus, and dropbox to backup my projects. so it was on the old athlon why not on the new one?

in a couple of years and you may decide to get something "low to mid at that time" that eats for breakfast toady's monsters - again for no big money.

Thanks everybody for the tips - I think that will do for now, otherwise I'll get information overload!

This is maybe obscene in terms of information overload, but . . .
