Hello,

I'm trying to get close to a sound with Zebra and it's almost there but I would love some suggestions. I'm trying to match the KEY BigSynth preset in the Sylenth1 demo. I basically have 2 sawtooth oscillators on channel 1 into a VCF1 low pass excite filter with some drive and then another 2 sawtooth oscillators on channel 2 into a VCF1 high pass. The oscillators are set to 11 poly and detuned. I've also tuned them the same as the 4 oscillators in Sylenth1 and also spread the stereo width to 100%. I then took an EQ to boost the highs a bit, but I'm still not able to get that top end sheen and crispness that Sylenth1 has - it's almost as if Zebra is TOO warm :)

Any ideas? I tried using a Shaper to boost the highs and tried adding noise, but to no avail. I'm wondering if I should put all the oscillators on one channel or maybe its the combination of the oscillators and the mixing of them?

Thanks!
C

You could have put this in the "sound design" forum. You'd probably get more responses that way.
As for that sound. Try using as many combinations of the osc spectral fx as you can.
The first osc spectral fx combination to try would be to add a little (turn a little to the right) the "expander" fx in the sfx1 knob, then set the 2nd knob to "brilliance", and turn it all the way to the right. Adjust as needed. Try some different ones too.
Regards,
Michael

which Zebra version do you have?

A general suggestion when recreating patches from Sylenth/Virus/Whatnot:

You will want to pan one osc fully left and one osc fully right. I think Sylenth does full stereo spread, whereas Zebra distributes unison oscillators in the panorama.

What happens distribution-wise when you pan a unison osc? Do all the voices end up 'stacked in a corner' when fully panned?

Yes.

The oscillators do real panning (as opposed to stereo balancing). That is, if you pan to the right, the left channel moves over to the right hand side. If you pan to the left, the right channel moves left. That is so for each individual unison-oscillator, with a 3dB (I think, or amybe 6dB) panning law.

Thanks and what about the detune? Why is it a bipolar?

Because each unison-oscillator is detuned by irregular amounts. so a detuen of -50 isn't the same as a detune of +50. This reduces phasing and audible repetitive patterns.

Thanks for tips everybody. Here is how close I've gotten so far (Sylenth1 is first):

4 oscillators (panned as Urs suggested). The Expander and Brilliance FX didn't seem to be working for me in terms of what I was going for, but maybe I wasn't applying them correctly. Getting closer, but any further suggestions?

Appreciate all the help!

Maybe only use the one "brilliance" fx turn it all the way to the right. It will make a brighter tone. It might help.

If you post your preset, maybe someone will take a try at it
