In real life I try to stay out of these discussions because invariably, music that I listened to in college is identified by someone as music that they listened to because it was a hand-me-down from a parent. Not an older sibling, but a *parent*. And even that is only when dealing with people who are of an age as to remember actually listening to phonograph records.

I'm not shy about the age thing. I actually think I was part of the last wave where the 45 rpm single was still a way of life.

First singles - bought at the same time--:

1. Schools Out - Alice Cooper (took me a while to figure out why Alice sounded like a man.

2. Saturday in the Park - Chicago

Date: 1972 or thereabouts.

though I had a few albums before it, the first single I remember buying (on cassette) was "Can't Truss It" by Public Enemy. I wasn't allowed to listen to "secular" music when I was young because my father was in a fanatical religious phase, I think I was about 13 when he came out of it, and yeah, I was into rap pretty heavily at the time.
