Hi everyone,

With the addition of "ladder" filters we were thinking that SynthMaster 2.0 now sounds thick and analog, but some folks still think otherwise:

What's your thought on that? Why don't we compare some basic sounds from other synths with SM2 side by side and see whether we're missing anything?

To start with, I have 2 sound samples from SynthMaster 2.0:

1. 4 Saws (Additive) with LP24 filter Arpeggiated

2. 4 Saws (Additive) with LP12 filter Arpeggiated

Since I was one of those that posted it is thin I will respond here.

Yes, I do think (compared to Largo, ACE, Sylenth, Massive, Alchemy, Omnisphere) it is a little thin in certain sounds. In working with the demo I found many of the presets sounding similar thus leaving me with a lack of inspiration to really explore and start tweaking it. There was in version 1 a hollowness/thinness to the engine that turned me off completely but version 2 does sound much better, just not better than what I already have. Like many kvr members, I purchase instruments frequently and constantly look for new stuff. As an example, today in the synth category I demoed Synthmaster 2 and ACE. I purchased ACE as it knocked me out with it's sound and... got me tweaking and having a lot of fun immediately.

This is of course just my subjective opinion about how I hear the sound of Synthmaster, I am sure others will love it. Synthmaster 2 is certainly a well crafted and usable synth with a reasonable price point.

Cheers,

C

Thanks!

Back to my question though: Are the sound samples above "thin"?

No issues with those, both good, like the mids.

Not every synth must sound fat in the deeps("ball-area" ^^) etc...

Don't forgot the SM2 is not focused programmed for fat dance-sawleads, the is an allrounder with a mass of sound-possibilties

I too thought it sounded thin and tinny. Like a cheap imitation Massive, IMO. The basses is where (for me) it really lacked. The pads are "ok". Not lush sounding. I don't know, just the whole "sound" of it is kinda meh........

I think if Helix was priced similar, Synthmaster2 would be just be vaporware...

Are you saying this in general, or after listening to the sample I posted?

Can we compare the same arpeggio pattern with a synth that sounds fat?

Personally, I don't hear anything in the SM2 filters what could make the sound that 'thin', but these might be some guidelines, (I've already posted requests about these)

-The virtual analog waveforms of SM2 is too 'perfect' --- We need some more 'analogish', faulty, dirty va waves to choose from; mostly required for thick hard leads

-The lack of "voice effects", like analog boost, drive, drift, saturation and etc. There is place for them in the voicing section.
These things affect the sound in a really evident way. Users want nearly hands-on controls for the most audible changes.
As far as I researched some time ago, the raw oscillator/filter sound of synths like Predator, Sylenth, and Massive aren't 'that' unique from other synths, or even each other. Even from the Virus's one.
Built-in FX makes them shine and sound fantastic and warm. The signal in Sylenth goes through a number of warm 'driven' parts, before even reaching effects like compression, or tube drive.
Or, for example the almighty Virus-B's boost effect drastically improves and hardens the sound

Consider these additions, as Synthmaster slowly starts to be competed against 'bigger' synths ;)

I'm no synth expert but I like the sound of SynthMaster because it sound different from what I already have. Also, I think it's easier to add than remove, so if you think it sound "thin" there's a lot of plugins available that can make it sound "fat".

The price/features of this synth is exceptional and the sound is very good. Maybe not the "best" (everybody have opinions on what's best anyway) but still very good.

Anyway, I think that people that say the above examples sound thin didn't even listen to them or are just trolling.

It does sound a bit weaker compared to Zebra, for example. It is the most powerful synth in my opinion.
But actually, KV331 makes sure that Synthmaster keeps evolving and I'm sure that it will stand among the greatest in no time, soundwise.
Of course at price ratio it has become one of the greatests, even now ;)
