Sorry for the bonehead question, I'm starting from zero but it looks like MU.LAB will be my midi platform, it looks great!!
I wonder what keyboard controller would be easiest to setup for a total newb. (49-61 keys)
OR, if I may intrude, MUTOOLS, what do you use?

(p.s. I searched a little but with M3 coming up thought I take my chances on new topic)

I use a Korg Kontrol 49 and am happy with it :)

But i think it's a personal choice. Besides the good technical features, i like the sense of the keys. That's important to me.

[2busdriver] - I use an AXIOM 49. If you want to see my actual one go to my web site and look at the "Gear" web page.

I would imagine that most MIDI keyboards will work fine with MULAB. It is down to personal choice and cost.

I must say Jo's Korg looks nice.

In general I would say a 49 key is a good compromise I have been down the less octave keyboard route and found them too limiting.

61 keys plus are great but the keyboard gets bigger and heavier.

Anyway that is two keyboards that work with MULAB M2. Jo is the only one that has used M3 as he has not released it yet.

Go to a store and try some out if you can.

mutools, and OZ, thanks a bunch! I'll get out to a store and try these first. I appreciate the replies.

[2busdriver] - Generally speaking MIDI keyboards such as mine with lots of dials, sliders and pads etc will work with Windows XP without using the vendors driver but I always use the vendors drivers if at all possible. Watch out for Windows 7, vendor drivers may not be ready yet.

The more complex the MIDI keyboard the more useful you will find it in the long run. Always take time and read the manuals.

Most keyboards will have a preset that uses the general MIDI standard and also have MIDI learn etc.

My AXIOM can get pretty complicated but I found it worth learning but I do not use all of its clever stuff.

Generally speaking if you want "easy" then get no knobs. But give yourself time and get the best you can afford and one that will serve you in the long run.

Certainly look at ours but also look at lots of others both in the store and on the web.

I bought yesterday M-Audio Keystation 49e
1 good news - MU tools can see it as USB plug without any special drivers ! :)
Also want to add, Ablton 6 (in complect) still haven't found a midi-keyboard ;)
2 bad news - Midi signales form my Kestation 49e sounds much quieter as under mouse, around 25 % of volume level. note: M-Audio's keyb volume is maximum !
WHY ? Could you ask me ?

Post

I'm using a M-Audio Radium 49 and works fine. Every knob and slider is recognized by Mu.Lab and I can assign it to whatever function I want (in Mu.Lab devices, stnths, effects or racks).

@synthyboy
Probably under mouse you have volume and velocity 100% and when you use your keyboard you don't use all possible velocity (I guess you're playing normal, not slamming the hell out of your keys).
Just a guess...

Post

hi sorohanro, under mouse 100 %, I tried to play slammy, but around 75 % out anyway. how to do under midi keyb - 100 % ?
I'm just asking is this MU Lab's "midi in signal internal limitation" or M-Audio internal thing ??? I don't think that's a bug, I mean just want to know :)

maybe not playing slammy (for the sake of your keyboard and your hands) but somehow disable velocity... ?
Don't know how... I'll try to see how works and I'll be back with more info. I never encountered this kind of problem.

I bought an Oygen 61 in December to replace my rather knackered Evolution 249c.

8 assignable Faders, 8 assignable knobs, Mod wheel, pitch wheel, Transpose, a lot of esoteric program functions I can say but little about, 61 keys, 159 Euros.

It's rumoured to be a bit of a problem on Windows (don't know about that).

I recommend it for Mac OSX 10.4.11.

I loved the Evolution 249c to bits, too (literally!), used it for 7 years.

Still got my Evolution 249-2 (no C).

synthyboy, the keyboard probably has configurable velocity response. There may be lots of settings and you may not have the best for you. You could start with "Max Velocity, no tracking", if it's available. (But really, velocity 100 is "normally loud", 127 is "as loud as is possible"... you shouldn't want to be playing that loud all the time... Although it is, of course, the correct setting in some circumstances.)

Drivers... always the drivers...
All M-Audio drivers for Windows are buggy.

I know what is GM Standard ( and know about Volume 0-127 and others midi standard - "things") because I have before Roland MC-303, RM1X and DJX Yamaha ;) All my q's only around how to use new soft, because I'm new user Mu lab and trying to understand HOW IT WORKS :)

Should be somewhere in the MIDI options, but I don't know where...
Maybe you have this option in your keyboard ?

I also have a M-Audio Oxygen 61 (not the brand new version), and I am very happy with it. I use it with my desktop computer under Windows XP and my laptop under Vista, and have no problem.
My first midi keyboard was a Roland A-30 (76 keys) : very robust but heavy and too large.
