urs; i know, it's possible. i mean though that the number of dimensions you'd need in any real system including non-linearity would be pretty big. also the error would likely build up extremely fast in such a system so it's just impractical. i shouldn't have said "impossible", it's possible as long as you're willing to give up having it work correctly

I was just bringing this example up to show that there are more ways to emulate analogue circuits than to represent each single part as a piece of code. Sometimes an abstraction is a more faithful emulation than the more obvious approach. And thus I'd argue that in some cases a little buzz may be well deserved.

that's true, i think actually that abstraction / meta models of specific desired behaviors are a better method than direct modeling both due to the resources required and due to the results you get. a direct model may become more accurate, but only once you deal with all the issues specific to that method of modeling. a meta-model where for example you model oscillator drift by a simple approximation of the effects of oscillator frequency on component temperatures related to the changes in frequency vs. control inputs i think is a far more reasonable method to follow than attempting to individually model all the components in a specific circuit.

it is a clear lie to say that such modeling is being done; on the other hand the majority of people will have little to absolutely no understanding of what i said in my paragraph above - so for marketing purposes certain lies are simply required. they're mostly harmless - i tend to complain a lot about them - in the end though that's just what is required. not everyone actually understands technical specs, and when something like "analog model" becomes a buzz you can't expect anything but the marketing to jump all over that and take advantage in any way possible.

so, is it fair to say "analog model" when you've mixed white noise into the pitch value for an oscillator? well, no. that is what they do, though.

Well, the buzzwords are mostly harmless unless a company comes and says "We're the only ones who..." or "Our approach is superior to...".

What really made me trip off recently was a company that brushed all competitors off by saying that their approach is so novel, they simply have no competition. When clearly what they claim isn't new at all (nor actually an accurate claim) and has been done by various companies before.

In that realm I noticed that some people have the ability to bash the competition by praising it. "What they do is really great, we love it. But now we have our stuff..."

i consider this as a psychological trick. first praising the competition for how good they are only to state immediately later that ones own product is even much better. in this context, the initial praise for the competitor's product serves no other purpose than adding even more weight to ones own superiority. IMHO.
