...and if you think you like THOSE pies, just wait till you see what we're cooking up here at AQ! We've just installed a new kitchen, fully ISO 9001 compliant, and we've got our hands on a proprietary vintage recipe that will return pie making to its origins, two hundred and fifty thousand years ago during the dawn of man! Yes, pies haven't tasted THIS good in a long, long time...Urs wrote:(it's my wife... she does the pies... their quality that needs to be admired)AdmiralQuality wrote:Have I mentioned Urs, how much I admire and even love your pies?

It's almost abusive in the way it sets up a link with another companies reputation and then trashes it usually with some bogus jargon claiming to offer superior tech. A duplicitous marketing tactic that should be challenged by devs and everyone else here.Robin from www.rs-met.com wrote:i consider this as a psychological trick. first praising the competition for how good they are only to state immediately later that ones own product is even much better. in this context, the initial praise for the competitor's product serves no other purpose than adding even more weight to ones own superiority. There something ironic in that statement with this thread, but I can't quite put my finger on it!LXNDR1 wrote:me, i don't buy into no type of trickery, buzzwords and rhetorics

Two things that irk me is when a developer makes sweeping unfounded statements about other synthesizers.
"turning this little knob makes sounds that NO OTHER SYNTHESIZER CAN ATTEMPT TO CREATE" ... "nothing compares to the power of X yada yada"
And secondly, the audacious claim that with a certain set of synth parameters the only limiting factor is imagination. Hmmmm, wrong.

I can't agree more.Urs wrote:Well, the buzzwords are mostly harmless unless a company comes and says "We're the only ones who..." or "Our approach is superior to...".
What really made me trip off recently was a company that brushed all competitors off by saying that their approach is so novel, they simply have no competition. When clearly what they claim isn't new at all (nor actually an accurate claim) and has been done by various companies before.
In that realm I noticed that some people have the ability to bash the competition by praising it. "What they do is really great, we love it. But now we have our stuff..."

I might be guilty of latter, but then "your imagination is the limit" may be a proverbial expression such as "the devil is in the details". Of course a lot of people believe that the devil doesn't exist and thus the statement is inherently wrong for them, yet it expresses a commonly understood axiom. I think teh same accounts for "your imagination is the limit" - while it's of course not true ever, it must be interpreted as "there's a lot of things to explore that are not necessarily obvious".DavenH wrote:Two things that irk me is when a developer makes sweeping unfounded statements about other synthesizers.

The claim that something makes things that not other product ever could or will is of course delusional. Even if it's a patented technology, the patent will run out sooner or later.

I think the problem is, it implies, "if there's a limit, it's because of YOUR lack of imagination, not mine."

Actually, it's the other way round: "If you can't see the limits of our product then you certainly lack imagination"

Hi,
interesting thread with some funny points, I hope I'm not too late to share some of my thoughts:
1) for me the only possible "unmoral" beaviour can be agaist the customers, no to the others developers. What Urs call for seems more an etiquette than ethics.
2) when in a public forum, (like the "Instruments" one here)
if a user starts a thread and 4 others reply, then there are 5 "owners" of that thread and so on.
There's no thing such "this is my thread", and for extreme beaviours we have the moderators who do their jobs.
A Company can have its forum, and so it is.
3) False claims or wicked definitions are not fraud, scam or any other damages as long as the developer provides
a downloadable demo of the products.
He could claim "after a session with my psyhcoacoustic enhanced subliminal sub booster plugin you will have better sex", the user can then download the demo and try for himself
