I had an Arp Odyssey, always sounded at least interesting, but I'm not so convinced that any parameter ranges were deliberately limited to stay within a sweet spot (and, least anyone mention it, the 12kHz max cut-off filter of some Ody's was a design fault, so not really applicable).

Yeah, that's probably true. I never had an Ody. My little Roland collection though gives me a hard time trying to reach extremes.

Probably the same design fault as quite some Moogs

That's interesting - of course Arp famously got into trouble copying the Moog filter design.

Actually, the Minimoog is one of those synths, if not *the* synth, that people often say sounds good no matter what. I've never had the chance to test that out (and I'm not sure that I necessarily believe it, I could certainly make the Ody sound bad, but in an interesting way), but is there any evidence that Mini's were tuned to prevent them straying into unpleasant sonic territory?

Well, Minimoogs are so damn limited, there's hardly anything you can do with them. 3 oscillators sound fat, unless you waste one for vibrato, but then no hardsync, release is same rate as decay and so on. They're simple machines...

So... the way I imagine this is like a classic synth toolkit, simple structure, but able to pick between say Moog/Juno/Arp oscillators, filters or envelopes, or would it be more a case of best of each?

I'm curious about this too. It sounds as though there would be different oscillator models, different filters and different envelopes based on classic synths and you could chose which ever one of those you are using. Is this correct? Kinda sounds like something similar to the Origin where you chose the model of each component you want to use...

'Bad' and 'good' are subjective judgements. And, perhaps, marketing decisions.

Well, I think it could be interesting to see how and how effectively an algorithmic method can be used to match 'vintage' stuff - that would be computational rather than subjective in some sense! Although, ultimately, ya it'll either sound good or bad.

Urs, I am both very excited for this and would prefer if you really did go for the classic "can't make it sound bad" type ranges... When I want to get extreme I have Zebra or A.C.E. or whatever, but sometimes its damn hard to pull up a plugin that I can just get solid tones on without worrying too much.
