The Rosetta suggestion was not for running the app, but for the installer.
You said that you run 10.6, but you didn't mention the computer model: what is it?
Are you using English as the OS language?
At this point, I'm only left with suggesting that you re-install your OS.

English is the OS language, using a MacBook with Core Duo 2.0 ghz and 2GB memory...
Well thanks a lot for your help Daniel. I actually might reinstall the OS. Although how would I get my data back if I don't restore from my Time Machine backup (which would of course negate reinstalling)?

You can reinstall the OS without wiping your personal data and applications: only the OS is replaced.
