Of course they can, why not? Did you even read the article that I linked? The guys at Microsoft did it, with results that were so bad for the console players, that they abandoned the whole idea of a cross-platform shooter. And I'm sure the upcoming Portal 2 from Valve (which will be cross-platform) will feature some major adjustments to make it possible.
I think you reach the wrong conclusions. Microsoft's failure of creating a cross-platform exactly shows the difficulties of treating different consoles on the same terms. There are a lot of games working just fine for game consoles when designed exclusively for the consoles. With regard to the thread, it seems quite obvious to me, that it does not make sense to compare shooters made for an iPod or iPad processer with 250 ram and touch screen control and shooters made for gaming laptop with big multicore processors, 4 gb ram and mouse control.
It is the same with music apps. At present an iPad studio like Nanostudio is extremely limited compared to PC daws due to platform limitations, but this does not mean that they can not take care of your needs if these are just as limited and it certainly does not mean that "therefore PC will always be better for making music". It depends entirely on your needs, your training, and your preferences. The same goes for Nokenokus statement that some tasks will always be better handled with a PC and a mouse. It is a question of personal preferences and adaptions to the pros and cons of the platforms and not a universal law concerning everyone, everywhere in present, past, future and all possible worlds. Simple as that and quite trivial IMO.

Wrong .. I even gave an explaination for why a gamepad is not as good.
IncarnateX wrote:And still all your universal claims fail in my specific case. Whether it holds for the rest of the world, I will let the rest of the world decide.
You should learn, that it's not always about you ... in fact I never spoke about you but precisely about "the rest of the world".

To make it clear again:
Noone in the whole wide world will beat one of those good mouse-players of this whole wide world in an FPS or RTS by using a gamepad.
That's what I was saying, and that is a fact.

Actually I just wanted to give a simple example to prove my point, but some people prefered to discuss facts instead of just accepting they were wrong.

Yes, I got you the first 10 times you stated it, so I know your beliefs fairly well now. But it is irrelevant because:

1) No one claimed they would anyway. It was a strawman you made up to justify the claim that some tasks will always be better handled with a PC and a mouse. All people did was asking you to provide evidence for YOUR claims, which you didn't.

2) There are no shooters running on both iPad and PC from which you could make the comparison or competition anyway.

3) Even if there where and you were right, the question of this thread is not what the best game platform is, but whether people think that the iPad can replace a laptop for their particular needs. Thus the fact that there ARE shooters for iPads could in principle fulfill peoples need for such games, even though they might be slower than on PCs. Its the same with Music Apps. Currently music apps for iPads can hardly compete with those for PC, but that does not mean that people will prefer PCs for making music. Like me, their needs might be modest and therefore they are willing to sacrifice all the extra bells and whistles for the touch screen control.

Yes, it is indeed annoying when people ask you to back up your statements with facts instead of just taking them for granted as universal truths coming from a spokesman of the world. I know the feeling.

However, for all this not to be in vain, I will make a last attempt to relate the whole deal to the topic.

Conclusion:

Nokenoku does not believe that iPads can replace laptops because he thinks that there will always be tasks that are better handled on a PC such as playing shooter games.

Thanks for your opinion. It has been noted.

Here you go:

http://www.rahulsood.com/2010/07/consol ... st-pc.html

There are no "real studies", because there does not exist a really true cross-platform FPS shooter that would enable such test, a game that would be the same, with the same amount of controllability for both PC and a console. The reasons why such game does not exist are outlined in the above article. No game company is going to develop such game precisely for this reason, as they would alienate their whole console-based customer base.
Therefore, it's not a fact. Thanks for proving my point.

You will never ever find a person on gamepad, who could compete with a good mouse-player.
No, that isn't a fact. Please provide links to studies proving your grand claim.
It is a fact. And the same goes for realtime-strategy-games like Starcraft. A Gamepad is just not suited for those types of games, and it's impossible to reach the level of a professional mouse-gamer by using a gamepad.
There is most likely no study, because it's obvious and well known.

Is there a study for "How to eat you pasta best .. sponge vs fork, what works better"?
No, there isn't. Some things can be answered with common sense.

@IncarnateX
With "touch-pad" I meant "tablet".
You've got some real problems with definitions. Facts != opinions, no matter how widely held they may be.

No problems with definitions here. The word "iPad" led to this misstype.
But it actually seems, that you are not able to understand, what an opinion is and what a fact is.

I'm not the one making grand claims based on anecdotal evidence with no real proof.

No, we're arguing about something completely irrelevant to the thread.

I'm sure this is a little off topic, I'm just not sure which topic it's off of...

I would like to add a point that mice, to me, were awkward when they first came out.

I find myself making up my own rules for using this touch interface often using both hands and multiple fingers. Seems to have a lot of potential for fast and complex workflow.

Can a mouse be in ten different locations at once? :D (sorry 'bout that)
