Are there still people using Tracktion?

In re-reading some earlier threads, it's looks like quite a few folks have had issues with Tracktion on multi-core, which is too bad. I run it on quad-core but have small track counts and have been using Propellerhead Reason/Record a lot more recently, so I have yet to experience any major frustrations.

You might want to look into trying Reaper. It's nowhere near as lean to work with as Tracktion (out of the box anyways,) but is extremely cpu-efficient. Very active and helpful forum over there too.

Thanks skip for your help. :)

...but really I'm pretty happy with Logic Express and all. I bought T3 because it was an insanely good at $20 even if I never used the program because it had a bunch of plugs and loops as well. Thought maybe I'd learn another program since I had it already, but unless Reaper or something similar goes down to some ridiculous price like $20, I'm probably not a potential buyer. :)

Logic Express indeed looks like a great program. Look forward to trying it if I ever switch to Mac!

yeah, there's a lot of instruments & fx included for the $$ :)

just an update: i rendered my audio & midi to individual tracks so i could import and finish my song in LE8. i will say that was pretty easy to do thanks to the "render w/o filter" feature. :)

i'm a little disappointed T3 didn't perform better, but i could still use it to create and import sequences from Cronox so it's not completely useless. :)

ha! figured out how to freeze multiple tracks at once.

bombs the program, of course, but i figured it out :dog: :hihi:

still can't get them to stay saved as frozen once i quit the program though. :?

Are you running on a Mac? I've never had problems of this magnitude on Windows, but I've heard that Mac Tracktion has issues that never got addressed.

yes I'm on a Mac, guilty as charged :hihi:

thought i'd heard something along those lines too. and the way it uses vst instead of the mac native au format, i wondered if there would be issues.

mostly learning it to help a friend who was on a pc but now he's using my mac and looks like he's learning more than me. :hihi: he was able to get his tracks to stay frozen on the project he's working on, so huzzah! :)

Nowadays I use Tracktion 2 as a FX rack to Propellerheads Record.
Since I love the automation in Record but I sometimes need impulses, Bricasti etc, I Rewired the FX send from Records SSL mixer into Tracktion.
Really Nice, VSTs in Record. :)

That's a nice idea! You still do all your recording and editing in Record?

Recording and editing done in Record yes.
I rewire Tracktion when I start to mix.

Now this is interesting... I'm one of the folks who loved Tracktion, but had difficulties when I upgraded to a multi-core system, especially at low latencies. As a result I've been using Reaper almost exclusives the last 18 months or so, but I occasionally fire up Tracktion to test things out.

This week I upgraded from an intel i3 system to a new i5 Sandy Bridge based system. I spent a bit more on the motherboard this time around (the $150 variety as opposed to the $75 variety, if you've been down that road)

Tracktion is now rock-stable using all 4 cores. Songs that previously would pop and click at anything under 512 samples now work flawlessly at 64 samples. 64! (at 1/3 the cpu load)

It's frustrating that it seems to be mystic voodoo to get a combination that works seamlessly, but for now, it seems I have one. :)

Obviously, no guarantees it will work for YOU, but here are my specs:
Intel Core i5-2400 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz Processor
MSI Z68MA-ED55 (B3) LGA 1155 Motherboard
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB Ram
Mackie Onyx Satellite
Windows 7 64-bit, SP1
(I'm using the built-in (Via based) firewire port on the motherboard, as the board doesn't have any 'old' PCI slots for my TI-based firewire card.)

Hi

If I remember (have not used it in a couple of years ...) in the 'preferences' you can specify how many cores to use - selecting 3 cores generally gave a better performance.

I got very good results from it, back then.

Flipper.

Post

Yeah, I'd used 3 cores in the past which was a bit more reliable and glitch free... but not enough to be a 'game changer'. I think over the years I tried virtually everyone trick/optimization the fine folks of this forum could provide... ;)

Does it still have the buffering problem? (test by aligning 24 24bit 96khz long audio clips on different tracks and see how many tracks you can enable before it starts to glitch).
