I would love to build a custom Diva with parts from Livid ...... i wonder if you can buy parts from other manufacturers also, those buttons look a bit flimsy for synths

Urs, how far would you say you have come with diva? 50%? .. 90% :) 99? :D

Hey Crackbaby,

Honestly, I have no idea. I don't think it's as simple as to take TyrellN6 and add options for the other algorithms. And then splash another type of knobs over it.

I think the coming two weeks are all about the new website and getting that up and going. I hope that this time can also be used to iron out any final niggles of the 64-bit stuff.

Once we're through this we'll be in developer heaven. Filters, filters and more filters to be optimised, with an occasional oscillator thrown in and circuits being popped into breeding boards. However, that's only almost going to be the case as we also have to jump start a sound design website and we have to do a lot of work on other areas of plugin development (RTAS Win anyone? VST3?)

We'll see... I truely hope that either Diva or Berlin Modular will see the light of day this year.

*wipes jaw*

mhmm.. that sounds great

in the meantime ill keep on having fun with ace and tyrell :D If you have ABL 2.5 you can run them with a 303 sequencer .. and it sounds GREAT!
Buggy (ABL's fault) in reaper, but it works perfectly in energy XT. Haven't tried any others.

Urs - You're awesome, just so you know!

Yes please.

@ Urs: Do you have an idea of what the GUI on DIVA will look like?

Personally I was thinking a bout a 'slot' module system or similar where you place X number of oscillators, filters, LFO's, envelopes, etc. Similar to one of the layouts of the Arturia Origin, and then you could change the characteristics of all the individual modules?

Or will you do a pre-determined layout i.e. 3 osc, ringmod, noise, 2 filters, 3 envelopes, 2 lfo's and 2 VCA's etc but with interchangeable characteristics on the different 'components' on that layout?

Post

@ Urs: Another thing, do you think DIVA is becoming more than you originally intended? In the first post of this thread you stated that:
Urs wrote:Do ACE/BM users need this? - Nope, not really. Do Zebra users need this? Nope, not really. Diva will be a subset. Merely a beginners synth. A small little gem with hopefully a lot of personality!
Is this still the plan you have for DIVA or has it grown into something more?

Post

Hey,

Diva is still supposed to become a simple, standard synth. As research/brainstorming went on, she'll have the following structure:

2 LFOs just like in TyrellN6
Oscillator Section: Different models ranging from 1 to 3 oscillators
Mixer: Two or three models
Filter Section: A selection of models, mostly HP/LP combinations.
VCA: One fixed section but maybe some choice in character
Env Section: Two envelopes, 3 or 4 models to choose from, one maybe with 4 rate/level controls
FX Section: Probably just a simple Chorus (but a good one)

So definately not a modular system. But every part that makes a Jupiter, a Minimoog or a Prophet. We'll even skip PWM and Sync in a certain oscillator bank. There'll be better alternatives for that though :)

Also, we might end up combining Osc Section and Mixers into one unit. Just counting the knobs on a Mini vs. a Jupiter makes this an obvious consideration.

The emphasize however lies in the faithful reproduction of certain components, and putting them out at an affordable price. That is, you won't have to spend all that money on different emulations when you can have them all in one.

Diva is a very serious project for me. I've spent a lot of money on research and actual hardware, and some people put a lot of faith in me. Hans Zimmer sent me his favourite Minimoog. We're also pimping our Pro One with the Synthex filter circuitry. We'll be using the correct model for that.

Diva will be polyphonic, but certain filter models will require to be played monophonic unless rendering offline. Some models easily take up 20 times the cpu of TyrellN6' filter. Again, it will still be cheaper to buy a spare computer for this than to buy any of the real instruments in good working condition. One can however always use the economic versions which will be about the same cpu as ACE or TyrellN6.

Hmmm... I should blog that on the new website. Eventually.

Of course!

'kinell!

@ Urs: Thanks for the lengthy reply! For me personally, being well acquainted with the layouts and features of different hardware synths, such as the Minimoog, the exclusion of PWM and Sync in a certain oscillator bank is nothing strange at all, and I'm glad that you stay true to the original design (reading your reply makes me understand why it's important, too). Cheers!

 that sounds strange... but interesting and understanable. :hihi:
The last thing I need is more CPU tasking.. but if we're talking about GREAT, "fully baked" analogue sound quality than I will find ways to effectively use it, no problem! :)

ACE and Tyrell's filter already sounds great to me.. I wonder how the new 20Xcpu hogs will sound like.....

Post

Hi Urs,
if possible, could you please integrate in Diva different quality modes
for modules that neeed much power?
And a "high rendering mode" that works only when a song is rendered in a DAW?
So many people with an older computer could use DIVA.

20X better, obviously!

This sounds so interesting!!!

I recently got around to download ACE for testing and I'm really surprised at how much fun it is and how nice it sounds.

I'm not much into the Hardware-looking software but this one is worth spending some money on and will hopefully do so soon.

But, now reading about DIVA

Urs. Do you have an idea of price range so I can set some money aside for it? :D
