I'll add a vote for Zebra.

But I'd also like to put in a mention for u-he's ACE. It's an even simpler interface -- almost everything's on one page, with no tabs or hidden components -- and a small complement of modules (it's a virtual modular analog.) It's got a prewired signal flow, but you can patch Any Cable Everywhere. This is where the surprising depth comes in: with even a couple of extra cables you can add very interesting modulations that give you a wide range of possibilities. Want to modulate pulse width with the output of a filter? Sure, just add a cable.

indeed. my post was in the format of a zen-tale or parable.
Free plug-ins for Windows, MacOS and Linux. Xhip Synthesizer v8.0 and Xhip Effects Bundle v6.7.
The coder's credo: We believe our work is neither clever nor difficult; it is done because we thought it would be easy.
Work less; get more done.

I'll throw another vote in for Fabfilter Twin 2. As someone who had to learn synthesis from scratch (without a hardware background), I found Twin really easy to understand and follow. The extraordinarily flexible modulation and control system is really a treat. You only have displayed the envelopes, lfos, etc. that you're using. It can be simple if you want it, or very, very complex. Check out some of DJM (Daniel Mauer's) factory presets to see how much control you can achieve with it.

When you demo it, be sure to have some effects after it that you can tweak to taste. You can find demos that sound better, but when you cut off the effects on other synths and compare to Twin, you find it holds its on or is better than almost all others.

For similar reasons, I think ACE is also a great choice to learn on. ACE has a higher learning curve (as it has modular approach), but if you can master ACE, then you can take that knowledge to any synth out there. Again, to me, it makes more sense than others. The CPU hit is quite big for ACE, so that's another downside (but it sounds great).

I've spent some time with the demo and it's pretty easy to dial in some good sounds. George may have simply been trying to put in a plug for his synth, but I don't think it was an unreasonable suggestion.

I would also keep an eye on MUX from MUTOOLS in the VST format (and for Mac as well I think) coming very soon.
A modular dream with the ability to load within other VST and can even build effects.
In MuLab it can even host Rewire.
As of now it ships even with MuLab free so you can get a teste of it.
It's by far better than Reason Combinator in many aspects.
So now you can make a new Synth with your your existing one and add all kinds of modulations, envelopes etc.
Btw, I'm referring to the one built in MuLab as of now. The VST version may differ for the better.... I'm not 100% positive.
