If I use an SFZ like "big jp8saw" for OSC1 and phase modulation with mod1, I don't hear a difference (even if I mess with mod1's pitch and dcoffset).
Am I trying something unsupported?
If I change to frequency modulation, I do hear a result, but I also get a crash soon after.
What I'm finding is that if I play with SFZ and FM, I get a lot of freezes and crashes. Most of the time, I hear a loud pop, and them SM will have no audio output until I remove the track and add a fresh instance of SM.

Just updated to 241, and if you try FM with SFZ it aborts.
For me it's not a high priority, I was only messing with it.
