Of course Metasynth has been doing exactly this for a while.
It uses the color values to indicate panning.

not what Metasynth does, no.
Free plug-ins for Windows, MacOS and Linux. Xhip Synthesizer v8.0 and Xhip Effects Bundle v6.7.

Yet here I am right now, using Metasynth to convert images to sound, with frequency on the Y axis and time on the X, with color used to control stereo imaging.aciddose wrote:not what Metasynth does, no.

yeah sure but it doesn't do what we were just talking about.

Lol.
I don't know if anyone remembered but I brought this time-domain image scanning with translational symmetry idea up about 10 years ago, but the discussion got sidetracked.
Aciddose you may find these papers interesting
"APPLICATION OF RASTER SCANNING METHOD TO IMAGE SONIFICATION,
SOUND VISUALIZATION, SOUND ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS"
http://www.dafx.ca/proceedings/papers/p_309.pdf
"A FRAMEWORK FOR DESIGNING IMAGE SONIFICATION METHODS"
https://ccrma.stanford.edu/~woony/publi ... ICAD05.pdf
Not to discourage anyone, but most attempts will sound like this (not very pleasant)

My first job was programming binary load-lifters, very similar to your vaporators in most respects!
