I had read a few times that the windows version was ok. Amazing they have ignored the many Mac users for so long still.

You can only evaluate an emulation on how accurately it copies its hardware, you can't use any other standard. GUI bugs are a different issue.

3.V purports to be an emulation of a hardware Wave2. If you don't care for the real Wave2, you shouldn't care for the 3.V either.

But I'm curious as to the general feelings of people toward this synth. I have the Waldorf Edition (albeit in a Lion induced non functional state), and I found the PPG v2 to be kinds meh.

I'm curious how the v3 fairs, not nessessarily at trying to emulate a real PPG, just whether it's a nice sounding quality synth or not before I considering upgrading to it.

Thanks for any and all opinions !!!
Hi,

i was part of the beta testing and factory sounds team and also released a commercial bank (see my signature) so IMO the PPG Wave 3.V is a great synth and a lot of work was invested to make the plugin sound as close to a real PPG Wave 2 like possible. Als othe envelopes where changed to behave like in the real thing. At this years Musikmesse i had the opportunity to play a real PPG Wave 2.2 and IMO the difference is not really big.
Like Piet already mentioned the PPG Wave 3.V does not contain a wavetable editor (so far) but it could import samples and it does contain the full original Waveterm sample library (as .WTB image files). The PPg 3.V also contain many more wavetables than the original 2.V and all of those were created by Wolfgang Palm (the PPg founder and mastermind) himself who also contributed a bunch factory sounds.

You could check the Evaluation version (fully working for a limited time) here:
http://www.waldorfmusic.de/en/ppg-3-evaluation.html
This license could be used either as an soft eLicenser on your HD drive or with an USB dongle (eLicenser).

The download of the latest version v1.02 is available here:
http://www.waldorfmusic.de/en/version-102.html

Th full version could be purchased at the Online Shop . An upgrade from the Waldorf Edition is available too:

The thread of my own bank is here with a download of 10 free presets (+ 7 samples):

As for the ability to soft license, it's not so much that I hate the dongle, the reason I liked Rob Papens implementation was that he gave you two of them. One for my home machine, one for my laptop. I have no major issue with Syncro under those conditions. But the fear of losing or breaking my dongle every time I traveled just sucked, I just sopped using those synths.

Hi Ruddy,
I reviewed the PPG v3, I like it very much! It does something different, it's not the standard synth for quick bread and butter sounds. You can create very nice sounds with it. I didn't have any performance problems on my Windws pc.

Does this thing work with mac at all? I'm running demo in ableton and it's crashing within a few minutes. In Logic I can even play some notes but feeling is very sluggish in overall...I used to like the original VST ages ago.

+1 - pretty much covers what I feel about it too.

Runs here on my PC windows 7 fine.
PPG v3 is certainly well worth picking up if you want a different sounding synth to complement your existing arsenal - I could bore you with a better explanation of that but here's a video that probably does a better job than I ever could:

It comes with a package of excellent presets (yep, I know that most soft synths come with presets, but truly the ones in PPG 3 are a cut above most others imho).

Cheers.

Short & Sweet: Great synth. Very much emulates original. Sits in mixes very well.

It's on my list but I haven't seen a competitive price for it just yet.

Edit: It was on my list. I've just read some of the previous posts! :)

No, I'm running demo V 1.00 - downloaded today from Waldorf site. Would be nice to demo 1.02 as it seems to fix my problems...

*edit* I found the link for 1.02 version :)

If you have the evaluation license you could use any version which is available including the latest 1.02. In fact with the eLicenser protection there i nothing like a real "demo" version just the license type is different.

I tried 1.02 with Ableton but response was so so sluggish I couldn't play anything. With Logic it crashed two times while I was browsing your nice presets.

I have a quite old macbook but it can run Synth Squad and Diva better than this. Could it be that CPU usage is drastically more than with mentioned plugs?

I demoed V3 on Win7/64 + Cubase 6.51/64 and there were no big bugs for me. Overall sound is really good. BUT, this gui is driving me crazy! Too small for me, no scaling and then those little triangles.
I decided to get a real MicrowaveXT instead. Complete different sound than a V3 of course but in fact i like the MicrowaveXT so much that i bought a second one just after three weeks. I was lucky to get two almost mint condition units for a real good price.
Now i'm making my own wavetables with Sounddiver and enjoy all the knobs and red noses. :D

PPG Wave V3 is one of the best sounding synths (along with Largo) out there, IMHO.
It's actually quite amazing synth if you play with it for a while and learn to program it. Behind the seemingly simple interface lie actually very rich possibilities for different sounds.
