Post

well i'm gonna buy something this weekend
can't continue with a nanokey.

my plan is to get a microkey 37
and add to that 2 nocturns knob boxes
Image
...and when i have more $$$ maybe have even 4 of them (that would be 36 rotary knobs)

what was the issue with automap anyway?

Post

Id just get one Nocturn for a start, as they can be a little tricky, depending on the host, what you need is two way communication...

I'd go for the livid code if I needed a controller tommorrow..

waves break, but somehow it all makes sense.

yes i've seen the code and was considering it.
basically i had it narrowed down to the bcr2000 (ugly as shit but lots of rotary knobs for a very good price),the code (lots of knobs but expensive, cramped and with silly visual feedback)and the nocturn (cheap price, good spacing, good features, great visual feedback).
i was goin for the nocturn....but what u mean problems with two way communication?....midi in/midi out? why would multiple nocturns cause problem for any of the modern hosts?

damn i was allready dreaming of something like this

 :D
(anywaya isn't possible cos nocturns have usb cables on the sides which makes it impossible to tuck them close.)

I got a Nocturn from kinda early stage and now its pretty hard to use it seriously since the potis behave pretty crazy and start flickering around..

no guarantee left and maybe newer series is more solid, can anybody confirm that?

maybe a bitstream for knobs?

http://www.thomann.de/de/cme_bitstream_3x.htm

could be more solid..

or these livids do look nice as well

I've tried the bcr2000 and the nocturn. Even though the software for the Nocturn was more integrated with plugins the actual hardware of the BCR encoders is much better. I wish I hadn't sold my bcr2000 -- maybe I'll pick one up again.

This is most probably just dust. If you are brave enough you could solve this with just a contact spray.
- disconnect the device
- remove the pots and apply the spray
- place the pots back in position and turn them a bit
- wait a few minutes for the spray to evaporate and reconnect the device.

I successfully solved flickering pots on several devices this way.

Wow man, great tip..will try that for sure and report ;)

I've been using Numerology which doesn't seem to allow two way communication, that is to say if the nocturn is opened on a softsynth that has previously setup settings the nocturn doesn't read these and update which cause no end of trouble when opening up projects and adjusting plugs. The plugs can read the Nocturn movements but the Nocturn doesn't get updated with the current settings of the plug when opening it. Rendering it basically useless for me.. So that's why I say check your setup with just one nocturn for a start.

If these things get sorted out by my Host developer then the Nocturn will be much more useful.. I quite like the Nocturns physical size and mine works fine, the crossfader is a nice touch and the Automap software is easy to use..

IPad controllers for the various U-He synths is a great idea. I have set up a couple TouchOsc Templates for zebra and tyrell but they need a lot more work to be usable and they are not all that pretty. PhillipTwenty's more recent template is much more complete (and prettier too!) Custom Apps like Omni TR for Omnisphere might solve many performer's controller problems, especially if, like Omni TR, they are free!

The Lemur iPad should work great i guess..anyone with experience?

edit: or what would you suggest?

touch OSC , touchAble or the Lemur? i heard the touchable doesn't work with current versions of Ableton live, is that correct?

i just got a Nocturn today....
i have an issue with assigning the octave/detune knobs
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=353641
till i get it working i don't feel like recommending it.

Post

I think octave/detune uses the same parameter. You can sweep through the entire range with it. If possible you can set up different controls for it, controlling the same parameter. Octave would be +/-12 semi (in %) and then semitones +/-7 % and then finetuning in % as well. It could be a little tricky to get it right with the %. Though tricky means fun! :D

edit: i'll post more info when i have it all setup.

i bought a microkey37 + 2 Nocturns (16 endless rotary knobs+16 buttons).
i needed a compact setup and it's working out well .all for less than 140£.
the microkey is fabulous and even a terrible keyboardist like me can get decent velocity action on it.
the Nocturn boxes are more than good for the price (there's loads goin for half price on ebay)and if u have a little patience to setup the automap software (which i didn't have at first)they are well suited for Diva.
love the knobs: good spacing , good feel , good accuracy. perfect for hours of comfortable tweaking.
the buttons instead are a little odd and clumsy to press (but do the job).
i have the 1st nocturn setup to control oscillators + oscillator modulations .
and the 2nd one to control filters + filter modulations.
workflow now in Diva for me is very fast. pleased.
i'm even tempted to get a 3rd one ...although i'm looking into maybe integrating an ipad soon (although i'm kinda on the fence to see what windows8 pads will bring to the table)
