Echoes in the Attic wrote:Wow, CM and I have pretty similar taste in synths. The only one I haven't owned there is SynthMaster, and I may some day. No longer have sylenth1 and DCAM though. However I only sold sylenth1 because I'm convinced it's dead. Who leaves a synth in "beta" for over two years? To me that just shows a complete lack of care/respect for your customers.
I guess all of the music out there with Sylenth in it must be an aberration? It's just crazy that a synth that seems to be letting you down has been in more released music than any of us could track down or name in a lifetime.

Yeah, producing a plugin that is awesome is a terrible letdown
No quite the opposite. I bought it because it sounds great and I'm very aware that it's used all the time for good music. However I don't have confidence that it will be updated and move to 64 bit mac etc. So as much as I enjoyed it, I thought I'd stick with stuff that seems to have a future. There are many great plug-in synths to choose from, I don't need any one particular one so if a developer can't even be bothered to slap a final release together for a beta that's been over 2 years, I might as well go with the others. Just my opinion, use whatever you enjoy.
Personally I think you're helping create a caustic and negative atmosphere that causes developers to clam up. The constant badmouthing, speculation, and rumormongering just gets old, and shows a complete lack of care/respect.

Selling a great synth like Sylenth is ... cutting off one's nose to spite ... well, whatever.

That's got to be the surge in it's popularity since Skrillex said he made all his growls with it.

It's still a good synth though.
It's on my list. I think that it might be the best general purpose 6op FM synth. Can you think of a better one that's in VST form?

Of course, you do realize that it's something of a popularity contest as well?
It's the best FM synth agreed, but as for the top 10 i'd question that, i'd pick DUNE any of the Tone2 synths, Helix way ahead of an FM for ease of use.

I know it's a popularity contest hence the comment regarding Skrillex, when he said the growls were FM8 and not Massive, there was huge interest in FM8.
Don't trust those with words of weakness, they are the most aggressive

IF S1 is someday obsolete, (for instance, the next version of logic has no 32bit bridge), well, LOL...will cross that bridge when i come to it.

it's too good not to use. a lot...
stupid, useless AU... once on vst boxes you could read "for mac and pc": soft instruments were made firstly for the mac, because they were professional machines for musicians. Nowadays developers make synths for pc/vst (you can find at least 80% plugins more on PC) and often forget the (useless) mac's AU. Let alone 64 bit updates (see sylenth1, AAS instruments etc.). Pros are sayng "bye bye" to apple, that's it.

It's an interesting list.

But like most list threads, the most important thing is how it lets us argue and also put up our 10 favourites as well.

So here's mine :hihi: :

1) Aalto
Alchemy
Diva
Waldorf PPG 3
Synthmaster
Synplant
Z3TA 2
Sylenth
Kubik
10) Karma FX

(And I'm not sure it M-Tron Pro can count in this synth thread, but I'd smuggle it in there if possible).

:D

classifications are always stupid, like "the best 10 songs ever" etc. People shouldn't read such bullshit. CM is not serious.

The only ones on this list I own are FM8, Massive and Sylenth. I've tried the evaluations of Diva, have the Zebra light, but more often than not, I find myself booting up my free copy of Arturia Minimoog V or Waldorf PPG Wave than any other vst synth. I'm really liking the free Dune Beat edition and I also use Cygnus a lot.

Then again, I really don't care about other people's opinions when it comes to choosing musical instruments and I certainly don't want to sound like Skrillex-lax.

it is not nice when you play music on mac and see your PAYED instruments are still 32 bit, while vst versions have been made 64 bit for months, sometimes years... That means pros are sayng goodbye to mac, period. See sylenth1... nr. 2 in the (ridiculous) CM "best synths" list and still 32 bit AU... They probably KNOW just a few people play on the mac nowadays and professional musicians choose PC.

as soon as you use something like "Best" as a qualifier, you're screwed as far as objectivity.

so take it as it is.
Free plug-ins for Windows, MacOS and Linux. Xhip Synthesizer v8.0 and Xhip Effects Bundle v6.7.

Work less; get more done.

Actually in many cases (outside of subjective computer synth lists) classifications are highly useful.

You may have noticed how I was not being serious in my post - like who gives a toss what my choices are??

Shame that what should have been just a light-hearted topic has turned into a chance to make snide comments and do pathetic eye-rolling emoticons by some people who should know better.

It is not serious, it is not even based on selling data or similar quantifications. You cannot classify something basing your judgement on taste. I remember another stupid "best daw" classification made by musicradar... at least that one, even if stupid, too, was based on fanboys votes... infact FL studio was nr.1 :D

It's kinda hard to please people with lists. That being said, of the ones listed that I have tried or own, Massive and Imposcar2 are incredibly overrated. Surprised at the omissions of SEM V, Aalto, Dune and any of the XILS synths. With none of those listed it's difficult for me to lend it any credibility. Of course it's all subjective...but c'mon! ;)

....and Reaper was #1 DAW the year before they picked FL Studio in their top 10 list. They'll probably make Bitwig Studio #1 if it ever gets released
