Yep, holiday is fine. But whenever wife hits a store for fashion, shoes, bags or jewelry I'm happy to sit down on a bench and do some ipad :)

Urs wrote:Well, hehe, I guess all algorithms can be done if feedback is set to zero.

But here it comes: Where feedback isn't set to zero and spans only a single oscillator, use a normal oscillator with spectroblend sine. Use "Scrambler" as OscFX, which is plain simple (but antialiased) FM feedback on the wavetable. Should deliver pretty good results with Resolution around 7 to 8 8)

So here you go, all but 2 algorithms :D
Awesome! Thanks for that! We really should have thought of that though

Any ideas about:

1. DX EG rate > Zebra envelope setting conversion.

2. DX FEEDBACK levels (1 to 7) > FMO (self feedback) FM Amount conversion.

3. DX Modulator into Carrier > Zebra FM amount conversion.

4. DX LFO rate and pitch/amplitude modulation depth > Zebra LFO conversion.

5. ...?

I think all the ones where the feedback doesn't span two or three operators are possible because you can use an OSC instead. So I reckon 4 and 6 are the only truly impossible algorithms.

EDIT: Damn, that Urs bloke beat me to it ;)

Interesting thread, BTW!

A classic experienced! :)

Just realised, the example in the link is not E-Piano1.
It's Fulltines. It was suspicious for me: it was much brighter
than E-Piano1.

So it is E-Piano1 or Fulltines the most wanted Dx piano sound?

Finally i made a patch for Zebra: the infamous DX7 E-Piano 1. :)

Here you can check the Original (iron) Dx7 : with a bit of much
velocity. I had to choose between the dx7 keyboard or my Roland
A90. From the A90 is a bit overdose the Dx velo, but if i would
play the dx keyboard then the FM7 and the Zebra would be too flat. So i scale it down just under 100 the hi velocity notes for the first track.
Still is a bit harder.

All of the 3 track is totally dry and mono. (like the Dx7 was)

What do you think?

Sounds nice. Definitely much nicer and closer than the FM7 version which seems slightly brittle compared to the other two. Really great work!

Both the FM7 and Zebra versions have a fuller, slightly muddy low-mid / bass compared to the Dx7 although that could be partly due to the headphones I'm listening on. They also have less brightness / sheen / sparkle. If you keep working on it I suggest focusing on these areas. This is where that little bit extra lies that gives the original Dx7 patch it's magic imho.

I think that the DX7 one has a better high end... it has a complexity and zest I like. Of the other 2 I like the Zebra one a bit better than the FM7 version. The DX is clearly better to me (imo)

Agree. This is the sparkle I was describing. I do think the difference between your Zebra patch and FM7 is more than just a bit better though...

Hi Hollo,

I am for Fulltines.

+1 for both of you :) The Dx is doing it's job well.

About the sparkle: i told about the Dx got more velocity
because of the Roland keyboard. So it's shining more than it's
normally with it's own keyboard.

The Zebra patch is doing much more well, dont forget it's mono
and dry: would need a little Eq cut for the muddiness and just a bit more velo to keep up with the Dx. It's really playable
and dynamic. Funny: the osc volume is only 4 on the sparkle part.

I like the creamyness? of the Zebra sound -- I find it to be very smooth. It just needs a little more brightness for my taste. Of course it sounds like you're already working to fix that. Even so, it's a very close recreation of the original sound, I doubt I would have heard the difference if it wasn't a soloed piece and was in the mix.

Not my patch, but yes, the FM7 version is clearly weakest... the highs on the FM7 version at times sound sine-y, lacking in a suitable complexity.

After I got ACE along with Zebra, I found them to make better FM type sounds than FM7/8 (at least as I used it)... That was when I took FM8 off my computer. Bazille also does some very nice DX type sounds...

Mhhhh...love that sound.
Maybe missing a bit of that 'body' of the original DX sound
in the Zebra patch, otherwise it sounds pretty good!
Was reading somewhere Urs planned to put some more fm love into Zebra(3),
really curious how it turns out!
I dont know, man...I just got here meself!
