Zebra Oscillator Retrigger- Random positions?

Hello

Lately I have been using Zebra2.5 and ZebraHZ ( the latest versions) to create some kick drums. However it appears (on an FFT) and sounds like the oscillators are not re-triggering at the same phase position on each note. Voice Drift is switched off and oscillator re-trigger is switched on.

This is especially obvious when I layer two instances of Zebra with both set to re-trigger the oscillators and with voice drift off, or when I layer with a drum sample. It does not occur with two separate oscillators within the same instance of Zebra.

Am I missing something?

If oscillators are not re-triggering in the same position, what is the point of the oscillator phase knob?

I would dearly love a solution to this problem so I don't have to use FM8 for my kicks :)

1) We could check out those patches you're using (to see if anything else is influencing oscillator phases)

2) Do you really need more than one instance to create a kick drum?

Hi Howard,

Thank you for your reply

No, one instance of Zebra and one oscillator will suffice (I used two instances just for testing the problem), but its when I layer Zebra with a sample where I can hear and see phasing of different frequencies on each different beat.

When I bounce down the Zebra track the phased frequencies remain the same every beat.

(For example with the default Zebra 'Initialize' patch with re-trigger on, smooth attacks off and voice drift off, played at fundamental 30HZ, played alongside a kick sample).

Its extremely subtle and I'm being almost pedantic (my apologies!), but I though it worth a mention.

Is Zebra meant to re-trigger the oscillators at exactly the same position?

Might be "MIDI-Jitter" - some sequencers tend to apply it within certain computer setups. In other words the host software isn't able to reproduce the midi-data exactly..

While I get noticeable time offsets with Cubase 5, I get almost no jitter with FL Studio. You could try a demo version..

Zebra - don't blame it - tame it..

Thanks for the reply.

Its interesting. After some testing the problem has not only occurred with Zebra, but a couple of other synths that aren't specifically created for drums (Z3ta+ 2, Sylenth1, Massive).

However, the drum specific synths such as the Waldorf Attack, Sonic Charge uTonic and fxpansion Tremor have no problem.

By the way, my DAW is Studio One 32bit on Win 7 PC. Same results occur with Cubase 6.5 and FL Studio. Same results on my Mac too.

If you have some lfo or mseg set to some filter or other. Make sure that lfo / mseg is also set to retrigger.

Can I hear you kicks? I wonder how cool they are
