I think Swarm sounds cooler than Hive but I should probably mind my own beeswax anyway.

Combine a Supersaw with a 303 filter and the term "Tee Bee" gets a totally new meaning... :)

You could also combine it with a Bee Pee Filter (= BPF).

Question: Do Bees pee anyway?

I agree, but Swarm is already taken...

I'm a bit paranoid about names being taken... remember Lush Modular?

FWIW I vote for Piranha. Definitely full of teeth, and a whole gang of them will eat the competition for lunch! (In fact, I'd call the osc Piranha too, it's more aggressive than Hive, and i'm sure piranhas can swarm too.)
Anyone aware of Piranha trademarks?
Anyhoo, Kyma Capybara had better think twice before bath time...:)

Well, then you should really consider registering it as a trademark (which is quite easy and relatively cheap).

Lots of hits in TESS (database with registered US trademarks). And for "Hive" as well. But as long as you claim the same word as a trademark for a distinct category of goods/services, it's usually not much of a problem if the same or a similar word has already been registered for something else.

Piranha Oscillator, has a nice ring to it IMO.

Defecating bees are a geopolitically sensitive topic :hihi: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_rain

Hmm, Piranha... sawtooth wave then must have a timemachine feature:

Does... since 2.5.2 I think.

Bronto Scorpio wrote:Another small, but very important thing about the possible "EDM" synth: The filters should open completely! Most of Zebras filters cut away a significant amount of high frequencies even at the highest setting. The Xcite filter is currently the best choice to keep those high freqs. For many EDM sounds the top octaves are very important imo.

Well... the cutoff frequency in a 24dB filter is the point where the signal is attenuated 12dB, so a quarter as loud as the unfiltered signal. It would have to open to about 40kHz in order to not attenuate 10+kHz audibly. This is when no resonance is applied.

When resonance is applied the attenuation at the cutoff frequency turns from less into none and into a boost with more and more feedback.

Now, if a filter would fully open, there's an easy chance that resonance will create aliasing, because frequencies beyond the limits of usual samplerates get pronounced - easily to the point that downsampling filters can't suppress well enough. Hence many developers including us refrain from that idea.

An easy way to open a filter fully from the user's side is to apply a little resonance, just below the point of a frequency boost. That should work for any filter that goes up to about 20kHz. Or, a developer could "fake" fully open by adding a little resonance automatically.
Yep!
However, stuff like the automatic resonance boost workaround are exactly what differentiate an EDM synth from any other synth imo!

As others already said, there is not really something like an EDM synth. I understand the whole concept more like an "instant gratification/easy results" synth. That's what people are meaning when they ask for an "EDM synth" imo!

Zebra can do EDM sounds very well, probably even better than most dedicated "EDM synths", but it requires more knowledge of sound synthesis to get there than with Sylenth for example. People actually have to know the resonance trick themselves for example.

I'm certainly no modern EDM expert (I have no idea about it), but that's how I understand things.

I really like the Hive name by the way :D

Hive sound cool but I wouldn't use it in the main track of my EP.

It would definitely be used on the Bee-side though :hihi:

!!! Do you mean someone has stolen to you the right to use this name ? While you have talked about it a few years ago ?

Well, I thought we had announced it prominently, but then D16 didn't see that and called their latest synth LuSH-101. Back then I had even asked the owner of an older synth called Lush if I could use the name.

However, seeing that there is a synth called Lush now, I would not release another synth going by that name.
