Awesome
I'm gonna say it, it's like night and day. One is great techno, the other is among the worst elevator music that I've ever heard. Techno is beyond what an orchestra is capable of. When you remove the machine, you lose an essential ingredient. Techno can have human elements, but when it's dominated by a distribution of human timing error, it comes out sounding like that.

If even Ishkur can't explain it, then I give up

If you read in between the lines and all over his site, he does a pretty good job. I really like, for example, how he points out that early techno was really more electro than techno. It only became "techno" after it obtained it's own identity. He also talks briefly about how certain sub-genres, detroit techno specifically, can be uptight about deviations from the identity.

Read closely, he gives you nice clues when he describes Tribal, house has a groove, trance has a synth, and techno has a percussion. Sure, he's tongue in cheek, as I suspect that you are being a bit, but, the definitions are still useful.

The other poster had it right, a lot of softer detroit techno is more house than techno. I have a bunch of UR stuff and it's more at home in a deep hosue/tech house set than anything else.

Interesting that this thread has come-up as I just spent a three hours on Ishkur's site the night before last listening & reading his hilariously pithy comments on various styles. It's really a good study & chronology(sp?)Highly recco'd if you want to learn the genetic makeup of the electronic musical tree

And then you remove the swing from acid house and you get acid right? Can someone help me take the step to acid tarnce, which apparently is distinct?
Well... yes. :hihi:

Except for the 808-electro part I think you're right on it. I don't think electro relies upon the 808 timbres so much as for example acid relies upon the 303. Just that at the time the 808 produced the most unique timbres available.

"acid techno" is usually referred to simply as "acid" and that actually came much after acid-house as the first examples of acid-house were actually created in the late 80s environment of house rather than techno and more or less were developed at the same time, separately.

So you couldn't have combined techno and acid into "acid techno" at that point as they were both infants and hadn't yet been really defined until later on. I suppose you could combine electro (to techno) and house (to acid), but this wasn't done so much until far later.

As for tarnce or tracne I'm not sure. I prefer to avoid delving there. My guess would be that it becomes "acid trance" when you replace the 909 and hats/cymbals with something more familiar to the trance scene and tack on some pads, delay/echo, massive amount of chorus and/or, 'super saws', though which mostly didn't exist at the time of course... I think in general it also becomes less progressive and more melodic.

The whole extensive pads and supersaws and whatnot is definitely tarnce, but I wouldn't say it's trance. To me trance is more about the (often arpeggiated) melodic synth parts and filter sweeps - but it's actually pretty minimal in most cases. The whole modern tarnce = supersaw + bombastic pads thing sound to me much more like the continuation of "eurotrash" - or what the mainstream media generally meant went they talked about "techno" back in the early 90s. It doesn't sound like trance at all to be honest.

I'd say it sounds like what you'd get if you took Alphaville's Forever Young:

Throw in a heavy dose of stuff like E-rotic's Max Don't have Sex with Your Ex, Culture Beat's Mr Vain and Aqua's Barbie Girl (i.e. bubblegum synth pop. although ditch the obligatory "bad rap")

And finally and then add in a heavy does of self-pompous self-indulgent wankery inspired by what I'd call 80s "triumph pop" (I take it you know what I mean). All played with supersaws of course. Lyrics not necessary though.

Personally I much prefer the Goa/Psy stuff to the newer stadium garbage.

You're takin the piss, right? Chemical Brothers=Big Beat, the first frat boy friendly EDM style, they are absolutely not techno.
