From the rules:

Prizes are given to the top 5 placings, winner gets first choice and so on down. If the field is less than 20 entries, only 4 prizes will be available. If less than 15, 3 etc.
That's weird, having so many fantastic prizes and only 5 of those will be chosen by the top5. What is the reason for having so many awesome prizes if you only need five to give away? Many devs have even kindly donated multiple prizes, but imho, that doesn't make any sense now.

Would love to hear an explanation.

ps. best synths for these are Zebra CM ,and Dune CM,and Xlis lab polykb player and all samelevel good only different... i cannot comment rhino cm and synthmaster cm becouse i dont get them work. and i hope if i get price is available in audiounit if not i cannot use it...:(
Voting is done by the entrants and other KVR members who feel like voting. People will vote for what they like. All factors are likely to be considered to some degree. Some may value synth programming highly or arrangement or production, and of course composition and musicality. Chances are, if you have a track that is incredibly good musically it will do well, regardless of using presets or being the best produced track. It's also not particularly easy to tell when presets are used vs. original sounds or tweaked presets - many times original sounds come out like a particular preset or many haven't listened through the presets enough to be familiar with them.
So, just make a track you like, how you like it, as long as it's within the rules. :)

From what I understand, each of the top 5 get to pick 20% of the prizes. Like: A picks a prize, B picks the next prize, C picks another prize (...) then A picks again. But I could be completely wrong; I'm sorta new here...

PS: Anyone got SynthMaster working on Reaper x64? I get crashes even with bug shield mode on :(

A few reasons:
1) Most music contests have only top 3, so having a top 5 is already very generous, especially considering that the wide range of prizes ensures that each person gets a prize of high value (quite rare in the usual top 3 contests such as beatport and indaba)

2) The top 5 ensures that there is a high level of competition - and especially so with this one since the old time winners here will be able to get some new loot.

3) Most of the developers are giving away the prizes knowing that only a few will be selected, and this is a rare thing. That's already very generous of them.

Exactly.

Don't forget some people put heart, soul and a lot of hours of sheer grind to do well and win a prize here, so what would be weird and not make sense would be that someone who just threw something together in an hour would get a similar reward just because the prize pool was big.

Having a lot of prizes shouldn't change the fundamentals of competition or the tradition here. The whole time we've had had many more prizes than winners, but I never heard any complaints before..

Like already said, the main difference now is that even the last of the prize winners will get a top prize which is already quite a big difference.

Now that you mention it I can see how this can be confusing and could be more clear, so will include a definition to show that it's one prize per winner:

Prizes are given to the top 5 placings, winner gets first choice of a (single) prize and so on down. If the field is less than 20 entries, only 4 prizes will be available. If less than 15, 3 etc.

Agree with that. This question has been up many times since the beginning of OSC and always have different views so it's clear people put different weight on what's important, but it seems clear musical style, composition and even mix seems to be just as important as the sounds themselves since it's after all not a patch contest.

Thanks for making the rules clear, V'ger.
And about what's the most important aspect in the tracks, my rule is simple: if it sounds good, it is good :D

Great rule (same here), but you(we)'re in the minority - IMO most ppl pay more attention to sound (mix/master) and preset tweaking/creation than composition...

In my opinion, OSC has many different functions and they are all good.
- Devs get lots of good demos for their synth
- People get to hear what you can 'achieve' with that one synth alone
- Participants get a chance to win great prizes
- Help musicians to push their creativity and forcing to compose
- Inspiration for sound designers*
*some of the CM synths have very limited editing capabilities

I only pay attention to the end result, though.

+1

Plus it extinguishes GAS. It makes you realise what's possible if one has talent.
So instead of buying something, learn something.

"It's not scary. You just lose a sense of who you are and all that sh!t"

Don't forget one of the most important (at least for me): you learn the synth's deepest secrets and sound possibilities.
