A few things OSC taught me (of many, including the ones Mulperi said):

1) The opportunity and motive to actually finish songs... perhaps before OSC I had 14+ hours of misc demos, and maybe 1 song (my own song, not something done for or with others). That's a good mindset to have.

2) The ability to accept what I have, and move on. Perfectionism can kill. I know a deadline is coming up, so will have to make sacrifices. It's easy to see what can be sacrificed, and what can be worked on in the allotted time. Last year I have 3 or 4 projects unfinished for OSC because I failed this, but this year I have Zero.

3) Anything you hear from others you can do as well. It's an equal playing field, so it's easy to see where you stand composition wise, creatively, production / mixing wise, sound design wise.

I agree with all these points - particularly in terms of making sacrifices to hit the deadline, and just getting something finished. I've been in pain every time I've hit 'post', but a few days later I hardly notice the flaws any more - it is what it is... I also love the fact that the limitations free me from endless angst... with all the software in the world, you can make anything you want, which is horrible. With just one synth you are back to battling with the technology, which is fantastic.

Just calculated the total prize pool this competition, and it's a whopping $4700!

FYI, the Dominator synth is apparently made by Antti at Smartelectronix from ASynth and Taurus fame, all done to CM specs: http://www.musicradar.com/computermusic ... tor-245955

The current CM Plugins package was recently changed to be cross-platform plugins only, before that the name was CM Studio and contained many plugins unique to PC which might be interesting for some so might want to get a back issue for that: (synths like Genesis, FabFilter One, Junglist, Dominator etc)

CM184 (November 2012) is the last issue of CM with the old CM Studio, including PC- and Mac-only plugins.
As seen from the Computer Music Vault - Downloads FAQ, Computer Music 182 is the earliest magazine to have downloadable content and I now see the Genesis synth was already dropped before that just fyi. But just to make 100% clear, if you have that synth or any other synth from an old magazine, you are of course allowed to use it, even if it's not available now. Any (one) CM synth can be used.
I wish I had more time, this looks like a good contest to enter :)

What's the best CM synth for making drum/percussion sounds? I am not too good at making those, so would need help in that department. I was thinking of using Dune CM.

Also if there are any free CM presets for Dune out there, that would be great too. I think Rob Lee released some converted to the CM format (no effects and the page of mod matrix) but not sure if I have those yet.

Dune is great for Percussion. Highly recommended. Let me know if you need any help with sounds in Dune.
