Do have to mix all tracks in midi or we can do all in audio? CPU is in the red!

Post

I have read the rules in the past but want to make sure:

If it is a gate or compressor in my DAW, it's ok to use, right? The other effects would just be delay and/or reverb (probably Epicverb) that are free to anyone.

quote from rules:
No external samples or live sounds like voice, guitar etc allowed. However, for convenience or CPU saving,
synth bouncing/sampling are allowed but only where the EXACT same result could have been achieved using
the original synth. This means that for example pitching and reversing is not allowed. Sampling for example
a bass drum in order to get a consistent sound is not allowed either. Sampled or bounced audio must not be
edited in any way. Samplers used must be host samplers or freeware and easily available.

Yes those are ok.

Normal effect rules are still in play, just with the added bonus of using CM effects as well (those that are within the rules of course).

Hi KVRiens
Haven't done a KVR challenge since years, but I found that this months rule was extra challenging, because there is a great choice of synths to start the adventure with. I really wanted to do something not too electro, so choosing Aalto seemed a good idea, and I must say, I wasn't disappointed. It's quite an organic synth when you get into it, and having the monophonic restriction made me have to arpeggio more than usual.
Now that I've listened to the other submissions, I'd love to dig in some other of these great synths, as much as I did Aalto.
Anyway, I'm pleased to participate once more, love this place, and love most of what I read / hear around here.

Issue #182 has the oldest plugs availible in the online vault afaik, so if you get that issue and a current issue then you'll have a good selection of plugs.
Hey, you can get MANY of the old plugins by buying CM Special 'The ultimate guide to mixing'. This is Cm issue 20 in the vault. It's a 3GB download, and has quite a few gems including Dominator, Genesis, etc.

Hi everyone!

This is my 1st time taking part in the OSC and I am wondering if Ableton Live's Beat Repeat (on the entire mix) allowed or does it fall under the rule "Sampling for example a bass drum in order to get a consistent sound is not allowed either."?

Good question, thanks for asking. Yeah it looks to be a sampling type effect. What you can do is make your own glitch / repeat sounds using the Piano roll or multiple layers / instances.

I know I can't use sample packs, but Can I use soundbanks/presets for my synth of choice? :D

If the presets come with the synth, yes.

... or are freely available to everyone. So no 'commercial' patch banks.
CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, Moved to Reason and Rack Extensions exclusively (from Reaper and VSTs) several years ago.

Ok. Thanks. I'll just have to get even more creative with what I can!

My song is starting pretty well, I just want to find or design a sound like a crash cymbal. I have to go through some of the preset links that were posted here previously, maybe there's something in there I can use.

I could try making one myself, but because of the time factor, I'm
using some pre-made presets, and just a few of my own.

What Synth are you using? Yeager might have some tips for a cymbal, he's a cymbal master
