Oh wow! That's interesting! I fell into the Curve2CM category, of course. I was going to go with Zebra at first but it and Synthmaster both had issues in Linux/WINE. Dune is a great synth but... already had a compo with Dune BE. Yes, Jasinski got TWO top 5's... :)

Now he tells me :)
And also now... Hey, there's a script. :)

File -> Make Copy for your own personal use. It's sorted based on Soundcloud upload date. It includes a link to the post with the synth/fx usage detail.
That's great, thanks :)

Yes very interesting stats, and DUNE's popularity fits in the thread of the other most popular synths here in OSC like Podolski and Zebralette. Obviously good sound and range, low CPU usage, stable, and friendly and not too complex GUI with a good selection of presets.

Just wanted to say thanks to the KVR guys for arranging this, had a lot of fun and well some stress, but learned a lot from been restricted, well apart from deciding which synth to go with in the first place lol.

Post

Dune is typical "easy to learn, hard to master" synth, we can tweak nice sounds easily but with modulation matrix and DUNE engine it becomes huge monster. I like D for basic electronic sounds but in most cases I prefer the sound of Zebra CM, especially for organic sounds. This month I chose DCM because of my weak CPU.

BTW I have to participate more often, KVR OSC is the best way to learn good sound design. Creativity comes from restrictions, one synth, one target and
focus on the details. It's not only fun but very instructive.

Surprised no one tried using SynthmakerCM... I almost did!

Honestly, I wanted to use SynthMasterCM but DuneCM is the easiest for me to work with to get the sounds I wanted. Didn't want to spend way too much time in sound designing because I know I tend to get stuck in the mixing and mastering stage.

The spreadsheet will be a huge help. Voting strategy is tricky -- have to figure out if the breakdown should be by synth used, and figure the best of each synth, or by musical style, or just by overall composition, sound design and production. This is tough -- so many of the tracks are really fine.

Post

Yeah it's pretty hard voting with so many great tracks, so first I'm going with what I enjoyed listening to most, then by execution of the general ideas, and then the more technical side, for as far as I can judge that.

I'm not gonna vote separately for genres or synths, cause I really don't feel like complicating voting for 75 tracks any further. And basically the playing field is still somewhat leveled by the initial freedom to choose your synth, except for the ones that weren't working correctly on certain setups/hosts. Else it will turn into 10 one synth challenges at the same time (not saying everyone should do what I do of course, but that's what seems logical to me).

But at least it isn't as hard as the last time I joined OSC, when you had to choose just 5 tracks and rank them 1 to 5, so you had to leave out some tracks that also deserved a chance....

Listened to everything and now I have some mental notes on what to vote, will be listening to them again this week when I'm on the road, and behind the computer, for the final 'verdict'. Really many talented people joined, and I'm happy to be a part of this OSC :)

Just wanted to drop a quick note and say hi and good luck to everyone! This is the first OSC in 2013 that I managed to find time to participate. Great to see that many of the familiar guys from last year are still here, and also great to see many new participants! Thank you all who listened to my track and commented so far. I just started listening to all the tracks, and the overall quality is amazing!

BTW +1 to what Uriel said above. I went through the exact same thought process regarding SynthmasterCM vs DuneCM :) And looks like nearly half the participants chose DuneCM.

Edit: Thanks Kaiyoti for the spreadsheet. It will be very helpful!
