Yup, I thought multiples would figure in there somehow as the common mod source. I've read it, done my homework, now it's prac time. See ya's!
Thanks for the help guys, :tu: possibly best thread ever!... Howard, Sendy and Bronto with no cats and no reverting back to childhood silliness! :D

Now X, go practice, make patches you lazy schmuck! :D

Still no Urs, that's a pity. Anyway, I'm sure he'll add his bit if he feels like it.

I've had only little sleep last night, today fixing some bugs zombie style. You're in good hands here :-)

Hey Urs! :hail:
Been some great tips indeed! But was just wondering more specifically from you about ACE influences sound-wise? Jupiter 8? System 100m?
None of the above?

I appreciate your zombie state, so no hurry, whenever you're ready :D

The circuit bending knobs. :-o

I say again: the circuit bending knobs.

Any hint of politeness and decorum shall be banished with extreme prejudice upon the use of these things that do open doors into a voluminous catacomb of sonic unruliness.

(Did I mention that I love the circuit bending knobs?)

Try softsync as well - people seem to pretend it doesn't exist because it can be quite unpredictable, but it's the key to lots of really unique sounds and faux-distortions, glitchy madness, engine sounds, inharmonic and longform oscillator shapes.

What's that you say? Didn't quite get it, could you repeat please?

Oh man, I had a feeling this thread was gonna be more Pandora's Box than Can of Worms.
Decisions...have a life? make music? learn ACE? I want it ALL!!! In the immortal words of Homer, "Oh what a world..."

Actually at this point in time learning ACE is probably the most attainable, and would probably unlock avenues to the other pursuits as well.

But I have to work too... at least try to. Dammit Dinky! The eternal dilemma. Commitments.

Urs tells us that ACE was inspired by a Roland system 100 modular. I think it t was his first modular synthesizer he spend much time with, located (I think) at school.

Having worked with the system 100 on myself in junior collage (1980) think it sounds quite a lot like one… though as they say "pimped" a great deal.

And LISTEN TO HOWARD! He's done this once or twice.

Thanks for that Tom, I remember the Sys 100 reference being mentioned, but assumed that was more of an architectural influence than a sonic-character one. Great that you've spent time on both the 100 and ACE, so your comparison is insightful. :tu:

Definitely has a rolandish character. That's about as specific as is really needed.

The System 100 has a brilliant manual. I like that they tell you to play a few notes on a certain patch, then will print a score with some suggested notes or melody. It's clearly written with musicians in mind.

I'm sure every patch from the 100 could be made in ACE.

I love the part about the S+H module, and using it to modulate pitch. They say something like "some of the notes created by this modulation may lie outside of the traditional Western scale, but can be used to add colour to traditional Western music". That wouldn't fly today :hihi: (ermahguard, it's out of tune, get the autotune!)

U-he is one of only 5 music software companies I truly follow--and I don't even *own* any U-he synths (I own products from the other 4 companies)! I love that I can play with the demos of all U-he synths till I can afford one.

My favorites are ACE and Diva. The sounds are so raw and inspiring to me. Zebra is cool, but a little too tame for my tastes, plus I have other synths that cover that ground.

Thanks for the inspiring work, Urs!

I'll have to download the Sys 100 manual. Thanks for the heads-up that it's good and a humorous read. I'll grab it even if it's just for larfs, and I might try copying some patches to ACE, just as long as they're not oboes and the usual synthetic-acoustic stuff.

But I've def been inspired again to dive into ACE, thanks everyone! Rolandish, good enough for me. The Loomer Aspect update is still a little way off, so ACE can get a large portion of my love in the meantime!

Sendy, where's your blog???!! :D Autotune... shite, what key is it in? *heads off to KVR to ask for music theory books on hip hop*

When did these non-musos start making music? Who let them in?
'So, what instrument do you play?'
'I'm a DJ dude.'
'Ok, but what do you play?'
'Like, what genre?'
'No, what instrument do you play and compose on?'
'Woah, wait dude, I PRODUCE.'
'Ok, but what do you play?'
'You mean what genre?'
'No'
'Oh, ok, yeah, well vinyl mostly, unless it's a shite club then I just rip the audio from YouTube, no one can hear the difference anyway when I turn all the knobs up'
