iPad's got nothing that can compete with Alchemy or Loom.

I've been drooling over it, but all I've heard or read is avoid buying from that company… another use audio situation (I've been hit on a plugiator before too). What's your take then? Safe purchase?

Maybe also the physical modeling side (check out presets using comb filters)

What I mean is … does the F'ing thing work like it's supposed to on a mac and does it sound the part like a $200 dollar soft synth should.

Loom's working fine here. They were a little slow with getting me the license (I bought it from Sweetwater on a weekend and apparently I fell through the cracks for a week), but no problems beyond that. Most of the problems I've seen with Air are all associated with the debacle surrounding the release of their instrument expansions pack update for PT11.

Also, note that I edited my post above to include Alchemy - the Camel Audio guys are top-notch and Alchemy is in a league of its own AFAIC.

I'm looking around to see if there is a better alternative. So far I'm unsure there is.

About a hundred freeware.
zebra would imo compliment thise well as it covers different ground...
Spire would be redundant in many ways to Z3ta+2. Zebra would expand your sonic palette. And although it's more money, Alchemy is a great candidate for this too. (But you can download the player and its library for free and give it a good run.)

A couple of zoo animals and a reaktor seem to be my favorite ITB elements these days.

Thanks, that purchase scares me a little. I want it though. I know I can trust zebra, and it would mesh with my other kit at this time. It's a hard decision to make… to throw hundreds of dollars at something you are unsure of.

other opinions may vary.

I'll probably go zebra… seems to fit the best. I can trust it etc. I love the idea of loom… I'm sketchy on the company. I have my eye on spire as well, I know it covers the same ground as Zeta… but the algorithms in the demo sounded much more up to date and it had a better presence in the room I thought… If you guys have more ideas through them up…I'll check back in later.

Wow... I missed this Loom thing. Overusing dumb superlatives aside, that is one crazy cool piece of equipment. I'm thinking it is capable of very interesting stuff from non-programmer types like me and low cpu as well. Expensive but maybe worth it for being different than all that other stuff. Need funds. Ha! :)

I'm playing with the zebra demo… it's fantastic and I will probably just go zebra. Urs deserves all the accolades he can get, I guess I'm just a little frustrated there are not more options at this point. I mean…. it's 2013-2014 people. We are long past the computer age, and we are even long past the information age…. we should have a mountain of reasonably priced modular studio grade software synths to chose from. That was supposed to be the point of software I thought.

Post

What is "studio grade" these days? Even if we're only talking about hardware, if you'd asked any mainstream producer in the early 80s if the TB-303 was a studio grade synth I doubt anyone would say it was, but a decade later this "toy" became one of the most sought after synths. We're up to our ears in flexible, good quality virtual instruments these days and with unlimited instancing in DAWs producers can take pretty much any VSTi and layer up whatever sound they wish. There are very few limitations anymore.

Seriously? I think we have way too many options at this point. :D
