Certainly. I did (wrongly) assume that this thread was about hardware synthesizers, but if we consider musical instruments in general, synthesizers (hardware or software) still have a long way to go in terms of emulating other instruments.

In that regard, I think hardware still has some edge with the Yamaha VL1. I've heard nothing in software that comes close to it in terms of quality and realism. Of course, it should be possible to implement the same algorithms in a VSTi, but I think there's some patent thing going on. Then again, the VL1 can only emulate a certain class of instruments.

Yes, it is more fun. Even hardware that controls your software is more fun. Now if you're blond and using hardware, you're having twice the fun already.

You can't make the music without the "just tools". What you wrote is like saying "Vegetables and fruits, they're just parts of a plant. It's making a salad that's the real fun." What's the point of dismissing/disregarding the very thing that enables you to make something?

It's a valid point of course to say the tools are not the focus, it just isn't good to generalize that.

I think even if you don't care which tool you use as long as it can produce a handful of notes, when it has an issue producing those notes that has the potential to ruin any fun.

But that is not really the issue here… The thread is about, 'which is more fun'. What I'm actually saying is, that it doesn't really matter what you use as long as you get the end result. Software and hardware are interchangeable with me.

I'm also taking issue that 'hardware is more fun', because it's totally subjective. But there's is no point in me going over the details, as 'djanthonyw' pretty much said it all on the first page.

Sure you can make tunes with 'just tools' if you want. The end result is what counts. Check out any of the early industrial stuff. Look at some of the alternative bands that are just using 2 guitars and a delay pedal. They make incredible stuff.

You can have all the best gear, and most expensive synths you want, but if you don't have that creative spark you wont get too far.

That's probably true - people tend to be visual and be impressed by a big collection of impressive-looking toys.

That said, if I wanted to show someone I was a "real" musician, I'd just pull up a piano sound in Kontakt and play a bit of Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata or something on my hammer-action controller...or pick up one of my basses and play a few bars of Rush's "YYZ" or "Digital Man." Quicker and simpler than any lengthy demos of tweaking a Nord or patching a modular.

To be honest though, anymore when people come over and they look at my controller and they're like, "Wow, that's a big keyboard," I'm usually like, "Yeah, so what movie would you guys like to watch tonight?" I just don't get much of a thrill out of demoing my gear for people or trying to impress them with my playing anymore. It was sort of fun in my early 20's, but I'm kind of over it now.
