BTW, why this big opposition against making this 'right'... it now clearly has become some ego thing. Why not simply add the friggin dot and be done with it. I'm pretty sure 2dat wouldn't oppose to it as it will simply make for a more usable GUI. And as there is only one knob-graphic instantiated many times on the GUI, changing it would be minimal work.
Besides that... whatever.

I'm not opposing to it, actually I think it would be logical and ergonomic to have the 12 o'clock dot, too.
I am surprised that the hardware actually misses it, too. Like someone noted: such a big case and no space for the 12 o'clock dot??
Yeah, weird. They could have moved the pots away from the labels a little and make room for it.
No, I don't think it's not an ego thing, this opposition. More like "we've pestered Layzer and 2DaT regarding GUI enough".
But there, I said it - I'd have nothing against it and it would be alright to have the 12 o'clock dot if Layzer and 2DaT decide to put it on the GUI.
Cheers!

People are serious about this, and commenting well aware this a free project (at least I am). I think nobody commenting this was talking ungratefully, or being disagreable to the developer or the GUI designer. Have some sympathy the dot at 12 oclock hangs in the balance not to be so casually discarded until all the pros and cons are weighed and subjected to review and discussion, meanwhile the space the dot at 12 o clocks takes up is is no fickle matter, it may fail to grasp the designers attention, let the battle between space and dot continueaciddose wrote:Get rid of all dots everywhere or I'll refuse to buy this free software!

The "missing" top dot is merely a compromise between having too many dots and not enough dots. While ideally the plugin would have a control panel with goldilocks dots parameters adjustable by the user, realistically you just can't satisfy everyone as someone will complain that the control panel is too complicated and filled with unnecessary dots adjustment parameters.

I do get that sentiment, seriously, I do. But at the same time, after all this work that has been put into it by Layzer, it would be a serious pity to let such an obvious flaw in the design getting by. In the end it will be a marvelous sounding synth with a great GUI (I really think it's pretty good) that's only being let down by a very visible ergonomic/graphic fault that could have been fixed easily.DuX wrote:More like "we've pestered Layzer and 2DaT regarding GUI enough".
Like: wow, what a great free synth, incredible work all around. Too bad they didn't fix that obvious fault in the knob scales though as the overall quality surely would have deserved that.
@ 2dat: Believe me, it will be like that

It's not a compromise, it's a design decision. It's not about satisfying everyone, it's about making good user interface designs. It goes beyond how it looks, and into how our brains 'see' things and create a perception of it. The knobs currently have two separate scales, one on the left and one on the right of the knob, without a connecting element (be it a dot or a label). It's as simple as that.aciddose wrote:The "missing" top dot is merely a compromise between having too many dots and not enough dots. See, when you go and call it "an obvious flaw in design," you make it seem like it's a big deal. In fact, the tone of your posts seems to indicate it is. Again, as someone already pointed out, "we've pestered 2Dat and Layzer enough." You however seem very hellbent on pestering them more. And for what? A dot? Most people are going to consider that an aesthetic choice, and not "an obvious design flaw."crimsonwarlock wrote:I do get that sentiment, seriously, I do. And right now it's a dot...what will the problem be tomorrow? How it lacks a metallic background? Or the shade of blue? And the day after? Nothing in life is perfect, and a lot of this stuff boils down to taste. At some point, you just have to declare "good enough" and move on. It's like doing a mix: at some point you have to decide that it's finished, otherwise you'll be tweaking forever in pursuit of perfection.
No one will say that (except you). And if someone does say that, I'm sure they'll be reminded about where they can put their opinion. This is a free synth that 1) sounds great, and 2) look great and 3) did I mention it's free? This was clearly a labor of love, and while you see it as constructive, it's really coming off as nitpicking. It'd be like if you played me one of your songs and I said, "oh it's terrible, the hat is .5 db too loud, kills the whole mix." Would a hat being .5 too loud really ruin a mix? No. Nor would the 12 o'clock dot not being there, completely ruin's someone opinion of this plugin.crimsonwarlock wrote:Like: wow, what a great free synth, incredible work all around. You've made your point, and expressed your opinion. Now let it go. If the 12 o'clock dot gets in to the final release, declare victory, and if not, continue to let it go. You don't have to use the synth if the dot bothers you that much. If you do use it, you might want to try saying "thank you" to Layzer and 2Dat instead of constantly harping on about what you would have done differently.

No idea what you're talking about. Two separate scales? Are you saying the 90 position is not 0% (of -100 to +100) or 50% (of 0 to 100) ?crimsonwarlock wrote:It's not a compromise, it's a design decision. Of all people I would have thought you to understand that.
How is it a design decision? It's merely aesthetic. The dots are completely useless and only there for aesthetic purpose - a compromise because the plugin does not display the parameter values in any other way.
The purpose of having dots on mechanical dials is to allow you to record the position of the dial. It takes some of the "guess" out of it, since you know the value is between X and Y degrees.
Since we have presets and since the host can display the value even if the plugin cannot, this is not a practical design issue, period.
Also, if people are still missing out on what I originally meant because they've got their funny bone in a cast: I was mocking the idea that aesthetics are worthy of the knot you seem to tie your panties in over them.
My opinion is the damn dots are ugly, and it's better off the 12 o-clock one was killed off.

I hardly think we'll get injured using this GUI...........
I agree the lack of a 12 O'clock dot looks wrong but really in the end do you use the dots or do you pay more attention to the position of the knob pointer ? Would it be just as functional with no dots at all ? I think so...........
Compared to the current GUI this mock up is perfect............I'd like to see it implemented so we can move on........

@crimsonwarlock: what Funkybot said.
Your case has been stated repeatedly and made abundantly clear. Now let Layzer and 2Dat digest and decide.
Are you actually playing the synth? It's a remarkable achievement and the fact that it'll have a GUI of this class at all is even more remarkable. IMO if you enjoy what it's doing to to your ears, I think you can find it in your enthusiasm to forgive what it's doing to your eyes.
