The problem with PT and AAX is that the requirements are riddiculous. It doesn't have the same structure as other plugins and needs stupid things like "Pace iLok verification or something...". And the most probable cause is not that it's safer or something, but that Avid wasn't able to do the development well enough, at least no other host needs it and all of them were able to use some standard interface, except for PT. Instead of some development on Avid's side, which would be a normal thing, they just want to make everyone's life more complicated... It's kind of sad the whole situation about PT, especially since it isn't even any kind of excellent host... It's just the old name, that everyone knows.
There are some things, that make sense in AAX, but these are just tiny little improvements and since other plugin formats work different way, these actually make things complicated and are not really worth it.
