The watermarking is not a solution at all. It is a complete waste of time.
Anyone with experience selling software knows these people just use stolen credit card numbers, drop boxes and such to get around these sorts of issues.
Sure, you can black-list "john schmoe" in new releases but the fact is the warez copy is already out in the scene and the whole effort invested in watermarking to catch "john schmoe" was a waste of time.
Water-marking is useful for cases like this thread was about, perhaps. Although as if it is really necessary with "registered to crack group" all over their videos in plain sight.

Regardless of any moral implications, I'm still utterly stunned at the lack of imagination displayed in those song titles referencing craxicles. Here are some good track names for electronic musicians:
Mouse
Monitor
Chair
Software
Even those people who use scientific terms that they don't even understand, in an attempt to appear vaguely futuristic, are at least TRYING to be somewhat creative. Then you've got deadmaw... "For want of a better title"... "Title goes here"... Reminds me of the working titles/filenames I gave my work when I was 12... They were things like SONG XYZ

But then, those are purely ironic, right. He has some serious track titles too.Sendy wrote:Then you've got deadmaw... "For want of a better title"... "Title goes here"...

When I was 12 I used to have a functioning imagination and gave tracks cool names like "rubber elastic silicone plastic" and now they have dumb names like "pants" and "wtf1256953".

Ya know after all the crap that followed from this guy, I'm glad your quote preserved my initial remarks.Urs wrote:No worries, that world is based on similar methods as the believe in the "new world order". Do you realize the sort of impression you're giving here? You might be advised to scooch back a notch, this is a real anti-crack sort of joint here.
One can of course claim that we're doing the very same thing. But then, last time I posted a screenshot of Google Analytics to prove my claim, the outcry of the lost souls was so big, the thread was closed in no time. It's too much for them to bear, just like it's impossible for them to cough up any evidence for their new world order - or spaghetti monster fwiw.
It is exactly the same quality of mentality as these poseurs that think their belief - eg., 'NWO' - in some bullshit makes them more critical than all of mainstream considerations. Very much Dunning-Kruger effect proofs, these. The top-down belief in one's own excellence precluding or obviating any need for solid reasoning, just leap to a thing that seems to suit their position of superiority, as unearned as the title is. Evidenced here in this fatuous lingo, positing 'Reverse engineer' instead of 'cracker' or your 'crackateer'.'They're pirates, too, doncha know, what a romance. Darkness is a virtue, and oh the revolutionary implications. (Of being a sneak-thief, taking things you don't need.)

Yeah, I can understand pulling that joke once, but repeating it seemed a bit lame. But track titles can be a weird and arbitrary thing - they can be a vessel for the ideas in the music, or they can be just an identifier and nothing more.chk071 wrote:But then, those are purely ironic, right. Luke Vibert also named some of his early jungle tracks after their running length. That didn't bother me that much, because it seems like a deliberate statement of "just listen to the music" as opposed to just shrugging and saying "I got nothin'"
Then there's the gibberish titles like Autechre's. They used to annoy me when I was younger but these days they seem quite fitting - like the music it's-self it seems like an exposed piece of code from a program has just been uprooted and plonked on the tracklist - a perfect analogy to the music.

Reverse Engineers earn indeed more respect than some usual developers since without their help they wouldn't discover the holes & lacks in their protections!

Then who gives you the right to choose for others what they want to useIf i decide to use a cracked software none of those oh-so-honest moral preachers will stop me from doing it. Also it doesn't retain me from buying then a "legal" version. All this talks of/about piracy are so futile.

The law is a decent starting point. Developers deserve to get paid for their work. Let's take you for example, probably working at McDonalds flipping burgers all day long and handing out fries. What if you worked all day over a hot stove, putting together happy meals and McDonalds decided not to give you a paycheck? Even though you've probably been reverse engineering french fries, big macs, and apple pies the entire time, you'd be upset because McDonalds stole your hard work.
According to your ethics, boo burger flippin hoo. Thankfully, the law and most reasonable people in society will stand up for your rights to get paid for your burger flipping efforts.

There are cases, when crackers/reverse engineers are your option of last resort, when sofware developer/company vanishes and users are left alone with their paid and impossible to activate software. Searching KVR forum I could point few of such sad examples.
How bad copy protection scheme can turn against developer himself we could observe, when Adobe was forced to make free downloads of CS2 Suite, after they shut down their activation servers - making thousands of legally resold software copies useless.
Keyfiles - OK, watermarking - why not, but challenge-response schemes should be avoided. They are doomed from the beginning. Buying C/R-protected software you are buying temporary possibility of using fully paid software. This is nothing else than software rent.
