It doesn't matter Mojo. It's still cool, and you appreciate that. The most important part, IMHO. Now get my back if I need it...

Aha! Thanks for that! You're making me look inept or lazywhyterabbyt wrote:m0j0byrd wrote:What form of synthesis is Bazille correctly described as?The u-he webpage for Bazille wrote:hybrid modular system: digital oscillators, analogue filters
4 oscillators with simultaneous FM, PD (phase distortion) and FR (fractal resonance)
4 multimode analogue type filters, 2 of which have 6 parallel outputs
So, while the filters are VA, the oscillators are their own digital beasties!

So who can explain Fractal Resonance to me? I like what it does, but I've no idea what it's doing.

I'm no expert, but fractal geometry is where a pattern is repeated at various scales. For example, let's say you have a fractal waveform which appears "random" at first glance (not particularly symmetrical). If you were to look at it closely and zoom in, you would see the exact same pattern repeated but at a finer scale, or a "waveform within a waveform" so to speak. And if you zoomed in again to that portion of the waveform, again you'd see the same pattern repeated but at an even finer (or higher frequency / shorter wavelength) scale.
That's a scientist / layperson explanation

So what is happening to the waveform when you turn that knob? Are we somehow zooming in on it or adding scaled repeats of the waves to create harmonics or something?
Still none the wiser. But thanks anyway!

Add that to the fact that CZ-style PD synths had specific means of providing 'resonance' (the patent is described at the wiki page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase_distortion_synthesis) then I'd be tempted to guess that in Bazille this combines something like the Casio mechanism with some sort of 'fractal' self-repeating embedding of (parts of) waveforms.Gonga wrote:I'm no expert, but fractal geometry is where a pattern is repeated at various scales. Or voodoo and shit.
An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

The manual is very clear about fractal resonance (diagrams!). It's multiple repetitions of the waveform in a single cycle, and a shapely amplitude window applied over that whole length. The fractalize value determines how many repetitions, 2^(1+fractalize).

Manual? Who reads manuals when there are wires to play with?!

the scope is good to view whats doing on.
I think more interesting is to view the harmonics using spectrogram or similar, this shows how the two waveforms relate in what we hear.

So, after hearing about this mystical "Bazille" all over KVR, I was kind of hoping I'd have some sort of reason to not buy it. Not looking good....
Sounds great, nice GUI, affordably priced. I'm looking forward to the release.
