Audio punch bug?

I was hoping that the new build would fix this, but it doesn't seem to:

When I go to record a punch in using audio, Tracktion seems to be deleting a portion of the audio BEFORE the punch in mark. For example:

I recorded some snaps, then set in/out and turned on punch mode. Backed up to a spot before the punch and hit record. During record, the punch seemed to work, but afterwards this is what I had. I'm on Mac OS X 10.3.4, Traction 1.5.1.16.

I should have a continuous track (punch was in the middle of a continuous track). This makes the punch-in feature not very useful.

Also, the mute while recording feature is almost right, but in the punch mode I would think it would only mute the portion you are punching over (between the in and out point). It seems to mute the entire track instead. not really a bug, but a less-than-useful behavior

Thoughts? Do we know if Jules is aware of this issue? Is this still a good place to post these possible bugs?

Thanks,
-Drew

"Make new clips the size of marked region" is the option for maybe what you are looking for. Turn it off and try your punch again. Just ot here. How many do their punches on the same track as the original recording? We used to have a term for that back in my "mac"-tools days...Drive miser. :D

I can confirm your findings.

When the input device is set to 'replace old clips in edit with new ones' you get exactly drooartz's screenshot.
When it is set to 'overlay newly recorded clips onto edit' you don't get the gap but when you undo it, you'll notice that in fact the gap has happened too.

And why can I hear the clip underneath playing when I'm punching over it? I'm pretty sure it didn't do that in the previous build. And when I'm playing back the edit, ALL layered clips of a track are audible - previously only the top-most was audible - if I'm not mistaken.

And what's with that 'mute while recording feature'. When I record nothing's muted at all.

You always could hear the clip underneath playing when recording over a track, at least in punch mode. Jules' new change was supposed to fix this, but what it actually does is mute the entire track not just the part marked for punching, as long as the "replace old clips" is selected for the input device.

If you use the "overlay newly recorded clips" feature, you should hear all tracks, since the new material should be added to the old. Only the "Replace old clips" option should, well, replace the audio.

Good to hear that this still isn't me, but bad in that I thought from the new release notes that this might have been fixed.

Not with me. I can still hear the underlying clip.

Can anyone else please give this a shot? To me this looks like a bug of the bigger variety.

Yes, I get drooartz's bugs as well. The gap. And the muting of the entire track, rather than only the selected region. To me, this is even worse than hearing the previous take -- I can't tell where I'm at in the part's music. Though neither situation is really acceptable. And the gap makes it all moot anyway.

If I switch it to "overlay newly recorded clips onto edit" I hear the entire track, including the selected area. When playing back aftwerwards, I hear both takes, but one is out of sync, perhaps because of the gap.

So frustrating. It's such a fine program in most respects.

Is this limited to Mac users, or is this the behavior present on the PC version as well? I've only used the Mac side. This was present in at least the last build as well.

At least I know it's not just me. :)

As a non-perfect musician, I sure like the use of a good punch in feature. This bug makes the punch in unusable in Tracktion, a true shame since I just can't go back to any other recorder now. They all seem so cluttered and messy since I made the move.

I am running on a PC/Windows (Athlon at 900-something MHz, 384MB RAM).

So no, not just you, not just Macs.

It's a shame. I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on these forums and see how things develop. Maybe in version 2?

I allways delete the portion of a clip I want to redo, set the markers and punch in. It would be a workaround for you if you wanted to do it diffrently but it works for me since after the first punch I don't keep any .wav files until I get it like I want it. I do mostly audio so my project pages are long enough as it is.

I'm also an imperfect musican

This happens on my pc build as well. I guess I tried to answer too soon. :help: I never punch in so I think I misunderstood what exactly was going on in your questioning. I hope Jules gets this sorted out for you guys so it becomes usable for you.

Hi

I just bought tracktion (on PC)saw this post and had a go on my computer - does exactly what you guys say. bit of a shame - I will be recording live audio etc, so a decent punch in is going to be useful.

One point though, the audio hasn't been deleted when I do a 'replace old clips in edit with new ones', it's just shorter than it was and needs to be manually resized back to how it was (using the triangle on the right hand side of the clip). Still a fag, but at least it's useable.

You're prob aware of this and I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but anyway...

Hopefully Jules will note and sort in next release
...and so it goes (Kurt Vonnegut)

I forwarded a link to this thread to Jules and got this reply:
Ok thanks - the fact that it doesn't mute the track is just the way it
works, and I'll probably change it for V2, but I'll have a look at the gap
it leaves when I get chance.

So he is now aware of this issue and will be looking into it. That's our Jules!

"Probably change it for V2"?? I would hope that would be a definite. Accurate punch-in ability (without hearing the mistake that you're trying to record over or losing a piece of the clip before the punch) is a very important capability for recording. I just came across this problem yesterday while trying out the demo (which I really like, otherwise) and I would have to consider that a major fallibility of the program, and a deterrent to purchasing it until that's resolved.

Actually, since he needs to fix the Punch-In anyway, I would also suggest that Jules consider putting some kind of a 'safety' on the Punch-In function. Sometimes when I'm recording a punch-in section for a track and get it right, I'll move on to the beginning of the next track to start recording something else. It'll play all the way through and I'll think I'm recording the whole song, only to find out at the end that the only section that was recorded was the section I had designated for a punch-in for the previous track. Arrgh! I've gotten better about remembering to turn off that Punch-In selection before going to the next track, but still it happens every so often and is very frustrating. The only program I've used that prevents this is Adobe Audition, where a punch-in will stay enabled on a particular track until you've got it, but once you move on to another track, you would have to reselect a Punch-In. I would like to see that kind of thing in Tracktion, or perhaps some kind of warning come up once you've selected another track that the Punch-In is still enabled.
