How does Tracktion 5 compare to Reaper 4 ?

O.K. The inline midi part which could be "brilliant" somehow manages to be cumbersome and just unusable sometimes. Try as I might to use it, I come out going wtf! Either it should open to big size when you activate it automatically... so as to make it useful, or it should be easy to maneuver inside there which it never is. Then, there's the having to always tell the program which track you want to use when every other DAW out there automatically sets the selected track to record enable... Those are just a few things that come to mind that I simply cannot overlook. But I check back every now and then to see what's changed, so I'm not a "hater."

Hi,

I watched some of the Groove 3 (Tracktion 5 Explained) video tutorials. http://www.groove3.com/str/Tracktion-5-Explained.html Great tutorials, and a very good way to evaluate this DAW.

so far I like the workflow, and features it offers. Plus... Less convoluted menus, and overwhelming customization options of Reaper, which might be is a bit too much to deal with. (for my taste).

Groove 3 has just released a new Tracktion 5 tutorial focusing on Tracktion 5's Plug-In Racks.

For Sony Acid type looping, I'm liking Tracktion but for straight recording with audio tracks, I like Reaper.

I wholly disagree that Tracktion is "out of date". I think the UI is actually MORE modern than the typical DAW UI. It is far more intuition based than most DAWs out there and I really like that aspect of it. What I mean is that there is a big element of "try it, it might just work" and it does alot of the time.

I also like having access to most of what's going on in my project without having to dig too far.

I tried to get away from this thread, but you guys dragged my back in with those two pictures of farm equipment he he he.

I took a chance and updated from a Tracktion 3 version that bundled free w/ a Mackie board purchase, to Traction 4 for $29. Then they turned right around and released Tracktion 5 which will cost me another $29 and as soon as I pay that, they'll release Traction 6 and so on. This will get pricey for a DAW that still has a long way to go. I find the Reaper upgrade path way more affordable.

There are so many things you can do with Tracktion that are not immediately evident. All pointed at not interrupting your workflow and ease of use. I personally think its very commendable what they've achieved in this regard. Saying it doesn't compare to a modern DAW in my mind makes no sense. In many ways, the workflow focus I would hope could be a example to other DAWs in the future...

Could you name a few of these things that are not immediately evident that don't interrupt your workflow and are easy to use? I assume this shouldn't be difficult since there are 'so many' of these things.

I'm not sure I understand how something can be not immediately evident, yet not interrupt your workflow, but I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Reaper was originally designed to be a low cost alternative to Pro-Tools. Which it does well. But midi is not it's strong suit and Tracktion is more of a all-around DAW solution with a non-traditional interface. The two are not alike. The problem with Tracktion is the implementation of some of the functions that seem to fall short in my long term testing. I'm on a Mac though so it may work better on the pc...

I could spend time enumerating all the things I like best about the workflow, but if you are sincerely interested, I would point you to the groove3 tutorials. They are great and pretty comprehensive.

Vague but hyperbolic statement relating to the numerous positive attributes of something. +4

Response long enough to answer the question, but claim you can't answer the question as it would take too much time. +1

'if you are sincerely interested' deflection. +1

The 'answer' is behind a paywall. +2

You're both wrong. Tracktion 5 and Reaper 4 both have 1 digit. :hihi:
