stevemac wrote:Hi guys,

Just saw Serum advertised and seems to be a lot of fans for this already.

Now this is in no way bashing it (because it looks lovely), but as I own Camel Audio Alchemy, is there much that Serum provides that I can't do with Alchemy? Is it the GUI / workflow people are most excited about?

I haven't gone deep into the Serum specs etc so apologies if there are some glaring differences :)

Cheers guys and congratulations Steve, looks like you're onto a winner - good for you dude!

P.S. Thanks for making LFO tool, probably the most useful tool I have in my toolkit :)
It's a bit like asking: I already have an espresso machine, do I need a dishwasher :)
Alchemy doesn't do wavetable synthesis, it imports/resynthesises long or short samples/waveforms in more or less good quality either in additive or spectral mode, but it doesn't generate table from those imports and it doesn't provide the tools, Serum does.

Cool.

Wavetable specific tools or tools in general?

cheers!

wavetable specific, like setting up auto morphs between generated/imported waveforms.

OK cool, it does sound nice - especially for atmos / evolving textures.

If all music tech developers and manufacturers could just stop making cool shit for a while and let my bank balance breath... much appreciated :)

This is from my short test with creating a wavetable from my Virus and Nord I posted earlier. This are the saw tables I've used: serum_tables.rar (8KB)

And the finished short song where I used some bars for the short snippets earlier. Nothing I will release and more for fun but I don't like unfinished snippets, so everything must be finished :P
The sound in the intro is also from Serum.

Day one Serum owner. Design workflow is super intuitive and the sound is undeniably powerful.

Congrats to bitcrusher and the team on a job well done! Looking forward to using this on many more tracks in the future.

Cheers,

I was going to email you about it, this one is definitely for you!

Don't want to feel left out of this party so here's something I did! lol

Just one pad, with some huge closing door sound which is part of it, and sylenth is doing the muffled detuned bass.

Oh man Sami...see, you do have what it takes to do ambient! :D Can't wait for the inevitable soundbank...

Spending my morning yet AGAIN with this beautiful synth.

Can't. Get. Enough!

I wonder if it's legal if I shared my extracted Massive wavetables.

I finally got to try Serum early this morning. Nice synth, but didn't see, or hear rather, what all the hype was about. Maybe it's because most of the presets seemed to be leaning towards dance, thus a lot of the sounds seemed to be overly dirty-sounding, and I was hoping for more clean ambient material. I will be curious what some of the ambient sound devs do with Serum.

Probably not. It would probably be better if you just showed legal owners where to go so they could get the same tool you used to extract their own wavetables.

Experiments, experiments - created 5 waveforms in the bin editor with Fibonacci harmonics 1-3/1-5/1-8/1-13/1-21 - then set up a morph between them modulated by a synced LFO, it's speed modulated by another synced LFO, in Osc 2 imported an oud pluck single cycle (the high nasal sound), did lot's of other tweaks and warps and then it sounded like this:

This thread is already full with ambient Serum sounds.

Just got my license for Serum, pretty cool--a touch rough around the edges, but they're pretty minor.

Anyway, thought I'd share an ambient sound I scratched out really quick. It's a single preset, the chorusing is by Ubermod, and the reverb is Aether.

Been working with it and I'm impressed how great the pads sound.

Really nice synth, great job guys!

Oh man, your making presets for Serum.
OK, I am going to have to buy it now.

Please post some of your patches when you can.
I would love to hear those.

You asked for it, One of the things I like about Serum is its ability to to do big pads and sound Orchestral.
Since I am working with a number of film makers, I decided to make some Orchestral sounding pads.

Here is one example:

Very nice, some nice orchestral sounds.
