PLUGINS adding DEPTH/MOJO/ANALOG VIBE/ 3D-ness ? Best ones?

Your ears.
There is NO plug that is labeled "DEPTH/MOJO/ANALOG VIBE/ 3D-ness - HERE please".

Pretty much.
I get more '3Dness' and depth with lo-pass filtering, level balance, compression and EQ than I do with saturation. That isnt to say I dont use Saturation, I use Britson on every mix with tape emu's and all analog modeled plugs.
But depth comes from mixing with depth. Simple as that. I could get depth without the plugs, and I could get zero depth with every plugin mentioned here.

Why don't you try some external processing instead of plugins? Adding some external hardware units will definitely give you the impression of "depth"...just probably placebo but worked for me

I would love to hear before and after examples of what folks think a plugin adding a 3D effect or depth sounds like. When I think of it, I think of a clear, well-shaped transient, with a little more added volume after the transient. So there's some compression taking place, without actually using compression. And it's all about the shape or sound of the initial transient and how the body of the sound comes up to meet that transient. Bad compression use (especially too fast an attack) can kill this sound.

Feeling good is a good thing for being creative. So placebo or not, it produced the desired result.Timman wrote:Why don't you try some external processing instead of plugins? Nowadays, everything is plug dependant : you want 3d of the Beatles ? get that and that... you want phatness of Aphex Twin, get this and that....
The honest truth is that one first have to understand WHAT constitutes "Depth" : the ration between close and far (or further) elements in your mix, which is achieved by placing elements within the stereo panorama, close or far, panned or dead centre. the magic word here is CONTRAST. otherwise there's no difference to elements : they are all shouting full-on, at your aural doorstep .

For analog vibe, Vintage Warmer 2 and Cytomic the Glue are a super combo.

So I wrote a huge long post detailing a method i commonly use to give an impression of 3dness or depth to a slightly complex group of sounds like a mix or drum buss. It was all about managing dynamics with level dependent saturation in the stereo field and manipulation of transients using crossovers and mid/side processing. Then doing general tone shaping. My basic point is that there isn't really a single plugin or process that's going to give you the proper mojo for a given situation. Even if you find one that does exactly what you want on a given signal it's good to know what exactly is happening so you can take those processes and break them down so you can only use bits of them if needed or adapt them to other signals that your magic plugin don't do as well with. For a general analog saturation and complex dynamic manipulation that works on tons of material my goto is roundtone from sknote. It does some even cooler stuff if you do it mid/side. So if you want just a thing that would be my recommendation.

This... THIS!!!!
the most amazing developpers. Period. When i hear people talking about character in plugins, i go all cynical until i remember those. And it's not just that. They are some of the best sounding and practical eqs and compressors ever. ROCKET is an amazing compressor that is suitable for so many applications. I was already using this when i still had a rack full of "the classics", and their most esoteric plugins are unique sounding (cmx, mojo....). One of the thickest reverb ever, and let's not forget OLGA.... now that's a VA synth with grit and character. I understand that they went under the radar recently as they didn't release anything new in what seems like ages, but if there is a company that developed stuff that made my survive my studio lost and its glorious hardware, it's them.
It's not what you use, it's how you use it...

So many people here raging about how 3D isn't some magical switch you can turn on. I think everyone knows that guys, the OP was just asking about various types of added mojo from hardware-esque plugs available today.
For my 10 cents, I find the use of a nice gated reverb on a few individual elements (usually synths) mixed with saturation and stereo widening / panning can make them really distinguish from the rest of the mix and grab the listeners ears.
Cheers!

Don't know what other people think, but for me a good reverb plugin usually adds some depth.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote:I would love to hear before and after examples of what folks think a plugin adding a 3D effect or depth sounds like.
As for some subtle mojo I usually use Redline Preamp. Big Blue Compressor/Limiter and Redline EQ are good for that as well.
I use plenty of other stuff, but in fact nothing is better than some panning and nice reverb/delay treatment with gentle sweetening saturation here and there. There're a lot of plugins for that.
Wonder whether my advice worth a penny? Check my music at Soundcloud and decide for yourself.

Demoed BBE Sonic Sweet, it really does add a dimension to the sound!
Don't know if its 3D, but if you apply the different modules differently to different tracks, it can make the different instruments sound a bit more distinct and the whole track more lively.
