However, I find that the UVI folks do a great job with presets. They make limited samples sound good. Obviously, though, Plugsound Pro is no competitor to Kontakt's factory library.
I am thinking of buying Kontakt. I got around $100, and if the Drummica thing works, I can jump in with just 124. I got this question...

With Kontakt factory library, I got -practically- a General midi soundbank with a lot to offer for a beginner right? Like, I will be able to stop looking for a good Bass SFZ or SF2, a good Rhodes, a Good Jazz Drumset etc.

Aside from the benefits of all the 3rd party stuff, thinking for just the factory library, is really worthy am I right?

I would just like to be able to -count- with x instrument, say from a GM set, at anytime without breaking my head because I dont have a good quality one.

I think it's a pretty effective route to get a practical sound set at a bargain price. Especially if its your first sound set.

Check the list / doc yourself from here:

You might not find the library especially GM friendly though (not like Cubase+HALion Sonic SE). I would imagine you'll eventually never mind about GM anyways.

It depends. However, 40+GB library at mere $124 does not sound bad to me.
Quality-wise, you can install Kontakt Player and its Factory Selection for free and see it for yourself.

For the next 24hours: 50% off when you shop for more than $99 at http://www.zero-g.co.uk/store/

Until Tuesday 9 June, when you place products (excluding all Vocaloids and our recent new releases Sensual Grooves, Haunted Ground, Urban Collector, Total Bass Drums, and the Kontakt Sound Designer Collection bundle) in your cart that add up to $99 or more (excluding sales taxes, if any) AND you enter the discount code "99HALF" at the checkout, your order will be discounted to HALF PRICE!

I figure that means Epica costs $65.49 (plus VAT where applicable)

I just now completed this purchase, at the above price. Excellent, excellent deal! Thanks, Numanoid!

Great :tu:

I just provided the hint. The big thanks should be reserved for Sam Spacey and Evil Dragon who made it :)

Num, is this the lowest Epica ever was?

Post

I'm not sure, it is pretty low though.

An added bonus for those not owning Kontakt, is that Epica is Kontakt Player powered, meaning you can buy Epica, and use that to crossgrade to full Kontakt, which is half price at the moment, only €124,5

That's a neat deal 8)

Right on. Too bad I have Kontakt ;)
But even for Kontakt owners it's quite nice to have instruments that are Kontakt Player powered, so they show up in the Kontakt library listing. That's where I love to see those great libraries from Heavyocity, SonicCouture, GospelMusicians and the like.
I always find it a shame that good and expensive instruments, such as the ProductionVoices Grand or the CineSamples Piano in Blue, cannot be seen in Kontakt's library.

But that can be "homebrewed"

I bought Virologic by CL-Projects for Kontakt (not Kontakt Player powered). At a point they provided a free "virologic.nicnt" file which means users can load that library and get it listed alongside the Kontakt Player ones in the library listening, even though it is not Kontakt Player powered.

Now that I own Kontakt I try to stay away buying Kontakt Player libs, because they cost a lot more being Kontakt Player compatible, which is like wasting money for me, now that I got Kontakt, I would be paying for something I already got.

Love that "homebrewed" hack :)

Just a note to those who are interested in the Epica deal -- There was no problem with me being in the US, and paying via PayPal. I got the download link email and activation code within a few minutes.

I'm d/l'ing now. About the only annoyance is that there are nineteen separate RAR files, each about 500 MB in size, and the zero-g server will only let me queue half a dozen at a time. I have the bandwidth to gulp down one big file instead; would be nice if that was an option.

Otherwise, it's looking good. 8)

Very interesting Num. Is that file text-based, i.e., something people could clone and modify to work for another lib?

Retro Machines is good if you like string machines.

For me all the 3rd party libraries from small outfits like Hideaway Studios, Hollow Sun, Audio Thing, Synth Magic, Rhythmic Robot, Zapzorn, Frozen Plain, and others (as well as some of the larger companies) are what makes Kontakt fun.

Yep same, couldn't resist Epica at that price :D

The Softube Summer Sale is a real disappointment imo. Why such a selection? Why not on every product?
Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.
